Ajax vs. Feyenoord match preview
De Klassieker is one of the Netherlands' oldest and most contested rivalries, with the first game of the derby taking place almost 100 years ago in 1921. The differences which cause the dislike between the two sides stems from out of football. Historically, the two cities – Amsterdam (Ajax) and Rotterdam (Feyenoord) have had their differences from decades ago, and when the towns' football clubs emerged, they had to adopt the rivalry. Amsterdam's people are considered artists, people of culture, with flashy show-offs, while the Rotterdam population is known for its strong work ethic and endless workforce.
The clubs’ current form
To no ones' surprise, Ajax continues to be the powerhouse it is known to be and currently sits at the top of the Eredivise with a pretty spectacular record. The Sons of the Gods, as they are often referred to, have conceded just seven goals in their first 12 league games and have scored 47 in the meantime. However, a majority of Ajax goals come from their 13-0 thrashing of VVV-Venlo, and they are yet to play against any of the big Dutch sides. In January, when Ajax will be facing Feyenoord, they will also have to play PSV and AZ Alkmaar and are going to get put to the test. The only disappointing part about ten Hag's team's performance in the current campaign is that it could not qualify for the Champions League Round of 16. Instead, the Amsterdam club finished 3rd in their group and will be participating in the Europa League, from which Feyenoord got kicked out after finishing 3rd in their EL group themselves.
This may give the Rotterdam side a slight edge, as they won't be worrying about European Tournaments any more and will have the chance to focus their attention on the domestic competitions. At the time of writing this, Feyenoord is sitting in third place behind title favorites Ajax and PSV Eindhoven and are still unbeaten in 12 league games. Seven wins and five draws have kept them in the top 3, but the club needs more to put a hold on to Ajax's dominance. Feyenoord possesses the current Eredivisie top scorer – Steven Berghuis, so they've got that going for themselves. Undoubtedly the Rotterdam squad is the underdog in this derby, but they've shown many times that they are able to conquer wins over Ajax and with a lot of goals too.
Why do we think that these betting tips will work out?
We've shared useful information regarding this fixture in the match preview, and here we will elaborate on it.
- Bet one: Match Result – Draw
- Bet two: Over 2.5 Goals
- Bet three: Steven Berghuis to score
Match Result – Draw
The main reason that we believe in this pick is that Ajax is yet to prove their form against a worthy opponent in the Dutch top-flight. Erik ten Hag's side has experienced certain defensive issues at times, with the most evident being their 5-4 win over Utrecht. Despite taking home the three points, conceding four goals from a mid-table team sure does tell you something. In the meantime, Feyenoord has been quite consistent but has struggled to keep clean sheets at times. We believe that the most possible outcome is either a 1-1 or a 2-2 draw.
Over 2.5 Goals
Eredivisie games are often ridden with a ton of goals, and we expect to see the same from this fixture. With both teams experiencing defensive issues and having quite lethal attacks, it will possibly be raining goals on the 17th of January. Of course, the possibility of a goalless draw is always intact, but as you can see from our free tips, our believes stray away from this scenario.
Steven Berghuis to score
This is a market that provides quite a bit of value because of its high odds. Berghuis's form has been on-point as of lately, and he averages almost a single goal per game that he plays, with ten goals in 12 matches. If Feyenoord is to score a single goal, it's most likely coming from the hand of Berghuis.
