The Africa Cup of Nations group stage is now in full swing, with several big upsets already. Algeria drew with Angola, and Tunisia suffered a shock defeat to Namibia. In this article, we’ll be making some AFCON predictions that make up a rather appetising accumulator wager.
AFCON accumulator betting – Games in focus
We’ll be focussing on three heavyweight clashes, taking place across Friday and Saturday.
Senegal vs Cameroon
Reigning AFCON champions Senegal picked up exactly where they left off, with a comfortable 3-0 win over Gambia in their opening game of this tournament, courtesy of a goal from Pape Gueye and a brace from Lamine Camara.
They face a Cameroon side who spluttered to a 1-1 draw with Mali, despite their opponents playing over half the game with ten men. Rigobert Song’s side have missed the offensive quality of Vincent Aboubakar and Bryan Mbuemo up top. Both are currently absent through injury.
Cameroon will surely raise their game for Senegal, as two of the biggest footballing powerhouses in West Africa. But Les Lions de Teranga have quality all over the pitch, from Edouard Mendy in goal, to Kalidou Koulibaly in defence, Pape Sarr in midfield and, of course Sadio Mane in attack. Despite a draw in their last contest, they will likely have too much for Cameroon in this one.

Our prediction: Correct score – Senegal 2-1 Cameroon @9/1 (10.0)
Algeria vs Burkina Faso
One of the biggest shocks of matchday one in the AFCON group stage was heavyweights Algeria being held to a draw by Angola. The Fennec Foxes were frustrated by Angola’s packed defence. Despite taking 16 shots to their opponents’ seven, their xG was almost 50% lower.
Burkina Faso find themselves atop Group D at present, after a 1-0 win over Mauritiana. They will recognise Algeria’s technical quality, the likes of Mahrez, and Aouar can hurt anyone given space, and seek to replicate Angola’s approach to besting their opponents by sitting off and allowing quality defenders like Edmond Tapsoba and Issa Kabore to protect their goal. A draw would also be enough to keep them top of the group, with only Angola left to play.
Expect Algeria to take a great many shots of questionable quality once again as Burkina Faso park the bus.
Our prediction: Algeria to take over 15.5 shots @6/5 (2.2)
Tunisia vs Mali
Another AFCON upset was Tunisia’s defeat to Namibia, where despite dominating the ball, they were thoroughly outplayed and fortunate to concede only one goal.
Mali, on the other hand, enjoyed a 2-0 win over struggling South Africa. Mali squeezed all their midfield quality into a diamond in the middle of the park, and 20-year-old Kamory Doumbia ran the show from the number ten position, setting up Lassine Sinayoko to score the opener. Captain Hamari Traore put the seal on the win with a goal from right-back.
Tunisia have much more pedigree at AFCON than Mali. The Eagles of Carthage were the third ever side to appear at AFCON, and Mali have only made the podium once. The head-to-head record between the pair is close, but Mali have the edge in this one on form, having won four of their last five matches.
Our prediction: Correct score – Tunisia 0-1 Mali @13/2 (7.5)
If used in a treble accumulator, the odds for all of the above are 329/1
