The narrative heading into the tournament was that Germany had been handed a favourable Group E draw at the 2026 World Cup, alongside Ecuador, Ivory Coast and debutants Curacao.
The four-time world champions have certainly justified that assessment, winning their opening two fixtures to seal top spot in the group, though they fell to a surprise 2-1 defeat against Ecuador on the final matchday.
Germany and Ivory Coast have now confirmed their places in the round of 32, while La Tri’s comeback win over Die Nationalelf earned them a spot among the best third-placed teams, with Curacao the only side eliminated from Group E.
Football Whispers takes a closer look at Group E, analysing the teams, key players, fixtures, and betting angles after the conclusion of the group stage.

2026 World Cup Group E predictions and betting angles
Germany
Germany boast the strongest World Cup pedigree among the European nations, but their performances at the last two editions left plenty to be desired, with the four-time world champions failing to progress beyond the group stage in both Russia and Qatar, but they have firmly put those disappointments behind them this summer.
Julian Nagelsmann's side booked their place in the round of 32 after thrashing Curacao 7-1 in their opening fixture before coming from behind to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast on matchday two, with Deniz Undav proving the hero, emerging from the bench to score both goals.
Germany then suffered a 2-1 defeat to Ecuador on the final matchday, and Die Nationalelf will now face another South American side in Paraguay in the round of 32 at Gillette Stadium on June 29.

Ecuador
Ecuador arrived at the World Cup boasting one of the strongest qualifying records in South America, with only Argentina collecting more points, as La Tri finished above Colombia, Uruguay and Brazil, which represents a huge achievement given the competitiveness of CONMEBOL and the fact that they were also handed a three-point deduction.
Sebastian Beccacece has an impressive squad at his disposal, anchored by Willian Pacho and Piero Hincapie, both of whom are performing at top European clubs, while in midfield there is Moises Caicedo, one of the world's most valuable players in his position.
However, that quality failed to translate into results in their opening two games, with Ecuador suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast on matchday one before being held to a surprise goalless draw by Curacao on matchday two, with wasteful finishing proving particularly costly.
Ecuador produced a fightback on matchday three, coming from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Germany 2-1, a result which sent La Tri into the round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams, fulfilling the bookmakers' belief that they had enough quality to advance from this group.
Ivory Coast
Ivory Coast topped their qualifying group unbeaten, winning eight of their ten matches and conceding zero goals in the process, securing their return to the World Cup for the first time since 2014.
The squad appears well balanced, with the likes of Evan Ndicka, Franck Kessie and Nicolas Pepe all bringing experience from major European leagues.
Emerse Faes's side are further strengthened by Manchester United winger Amad Diallo, who proved to be the difference-maker on matchday one, coming off the bench to secure all three points with a late strike against Ecuador.
However, Ivory Coast were unable to hold on to their lead against Germany on matchday two, with their profligacy in front of goal proving costly as the Elephants conceded a late winner.
The three-time African champions defeated Curacao 2-0 on the final matchday to confirm second place, earning a berth at the World Cup’s knockout stage for the first time ever, and they now face Norway in the round of 32 on June 30 in Arlington.
Curacao
Curacao made history as the smallest nation ever to appear at a World Cup, both in population and land area, with their qualification campaign under former Netherlands and Feyenoord boss Dick Advocaat seeing them finish above Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago to secure a remarkable debut.
The squad featured a large contingent of Dutch-based players, many of whom switched allegiance in recent years, including Aston Villa midfielder Leandro Bacuna, who captained the side and is their record appearance holder.
While that experienced group was comfortably second best against Germany on matchday one, Curacao showed greater resilience on matchday two to claim their first point at the tournament, holding Ecuador to a goalless draw, with goalkeeper Eloy Room the standout performer, producing 15 saves to frustrate the South Americans.
Curacao's first World Cup appearance has officially come to an end following their 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast on the final matchday, though the debutants leave having written a chapter in their nation's history that will not be forgotten anytime soon.
