Whisper+ analysis
Authenticity (2.5/5): Fresh reports from Spain
Arsenal looked to have beaten off the competition to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, but now they face competition at the eleventh hour from Real Madrid.
This news broke this morning on fichajes.net, a transfer site whose authority can sometimes be questioned, but the Spanish outlet may have insider knowledge from Los Blancos.
Value (2.5/5): More than Gunners offering
Some reports have suggested the Gunners were going to get the deal over the line for £51 million, in line with his current market valuation.
That suggests Los Blancos are going to pay at least that, but likely a good deal more if they have turned La Real heads so late in the day.
Suitability (4.5/5): Madrid loves a winner
A UEFA Euro 2024 winner, Sociedad academy product Zubimendi has been a consistent performer in La Liga for the past few seasons.
The step away from home surroundings to the pressure of the Santiago Bernabeu will be a test, but he has proven himself at the highest level, and his defensive midfield role will be appreciated by Carlo Ancelotti.
Upgrade? (3/5): Straight battle with Tchouameni
The European champions may lose their only defensive midfielder soon, with Aurelien Tchouameni subject of rumours away from the Bernabeu.
If the Frenchman does stay, Zubimendi has the ability to take his place in the line-up, and Ancelotti preferring just one holding midfielder will make the battle between them very interesting.
Logic (4/5): Better than the Premier League?
Not only would Zubimendi have to adapt to life in England, but a move to Liverpool, Man City or Arsenal would offer plenty more competition in the long term from the likes of Rodri and Declan Rice.
A move to Madrid would likely be more comfortable, while it is not everyday Real come calling with a shortage of options in your position.
Whisper+ verdict: 16.5/25
There is enough reason to believe Real would be interested, but for now it still looks like Arsenal will get their man.
