First to score - Wrexham

Wrexham have netted the opening goal in seven of their last eight matches.

In their first home game of the 2025-26 Championship campaign, Wrexham take on West Bromwich Albion at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday.

While the Red Dragons secured a huge win over Hull City in the EFL Cup on Tuesday, the visitors were dumped out of the cup competition, and Football Whispers offers insight on possible outcomes of this weekend’s matchup.

Wrexham vs West Brom prediction: A close one to call

Key stats

  • Wrexham have opened the scoring in seven of their last eight matches in all competitions while netting a combined 13 goals in that time.
  • West Brom have failed to taste victory away from home in 2025, losing six and claiming five draws from their 11 competitive away games since the turn of the year.
  • Wrexham are unbeaten in each of their last seven competitive home matches (5W, 2D) since losing on penalties to Peterborough in the EFL Trophy on February 26.
  • There have been fewer than five bookings in each of West Brom’s last nine matches, a run stretching back to April’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Coventry City.

Correct score prediction: Wrexham 1-1 West Brom

Buoyed by their impressive cup victory over Hull, Wrexham will return to league action with renewed belief as they look to secure their first win. However, West Brom boasts a slightly superior and more experienced squad on paper and we predict they will hold out for a share of the spoils.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Both sides evenly matched

  • HOME: 7/4 (2.75) – 36.4%
  • DRAW: 11/5 (3.20) – 31.3%
  • AWAY: 8/5 (2.60) – 38.5%

*Odds from Ladbrokes, subject to change

While Wrexham and West Brom picked up contrasting results to start the league campaign, they are almost evenly matched on paper, as indicated by their win probabilities.

While the Red Dragons are 36.4% likely to secure maximum points according to the bookmakers, West Brom are slightly favoured, with a 38.5% win probability.

Wrexham bounced back from their opening-day defeat in midweek when they picked up a penalty-shootout victory over Hull City in the EFL Cup first round at the Racecourse Ground.

On the other hand, West Brom were dumped out of the EFL in the first round for a third consecutive year last Tuesday as they were beaten on penalties by Derby County on home turf.

Most recent H2Hs: A first in over 50 years

This will be just the third meeting between Wrexham and West Brom, with both sides splitting the results with one win apiece.

They first met in the FA Cup back in January 1930, when Wrexham secured a 1-0 victory. The Baggies returned the favour in July 1971 as they secured a 2-1 win when they squared off in the Watney Cup.

Wrexham Preview: Out to make their mark

Following three successive promotions, Wrexham were denied a dream result on their long-awaited return to the Championship as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Southampton in the league opener on August 9.

Josh Windass struck midway through the first half to send the Wrexham fans into a frenzy, but they painfully let their lead slip away in stoppage time after Ryan Manning and Jack Stephens hit the target to turn the game on its head in dramatic fashion.

However, Phil Parkinson’s men quickly moved on from the league defeat in the EFL Cup as they netted two goals in stoppage time to force a 3-3 draw against Hull City and take the tie to penalties, where they picked up a 5-3 victory.

With their cup result, Wrexham have now gone seven straight competitive home games without defeat, picking up five wins and two draws since February’s penalty-shootout loss against Peterborough in the EFL Trophy.

West Brom preview: Darnell Furlong misses out

West Brom failed to end their first-round woes in the EFL Cup as they were beaten on penalties by Derby County after a 1-1 stalemate in normal time at the Hawthorns on Tuesday.

Joe Ward grabbed the headlines for Derby as he struck in the 96th minute to cancel out Aune Selland Heggebo’s 67th-minute opener and force penalties, where the Rams secured a 3-2 victory.

West Brom now turn their focus to the Championship, where they kicked off their 2025-26 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Blackburn courtesy of an early strike from Isaac Price.

The Baggies will have to cope without the services of experienced defender Darnell Furlong, who is suspended after receiving his marching orders in last week’s season opener against Blackburn.

Predicted lineup: Wildsmith (GK), Campbell, Phillips, Heggem, Styles, Molumby, Mowatt, Fellows, Price, Grant & Heggebo

Player to watch – Ollie Palmer

Ollie Palmer celebrates the second of his two goals against Hull—Photo by IMAGO

Palmer was unavailable to feature in Wrexham's Championship curtain raiser against Southampton but made his first appearance of the season in Tuesday's EFL Cup involvement against Hull City.

Just over 20 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute, the 33-year-old popped up with two late goals to earn his side a 3-3 draw and force penalties, where he also found the back of the net en route to a 5-4 shootout victory.

Palmer's heroics in midweek should earn him a start on Saturday, and the Englishman will be one to keep an eye on.
