Porto boast the best defensive record in the Primeira Liga, with just four goals conceded so far.

Primeira Liga leaders Porto will look to maintain their 100% league record when they visit the Estadio Dom Afonso Henriques to face Vitoria Guimaraes on Sunday. While the visitors have collected all 30 available in the opening 10 games, Os Vimaranenses head into this weekend’s challenge encouraged by improvements at the back, having recorded three consecutive clean sheets.

Vitoria Guimaraes turned in another improved defensive display last Monday as they held Gil Vicente to a goalless draw when the two sides squared off at the Estadio Cidade de Barcelos.

Prior to that, Os Vimaranenses snapped their run of five straight competent games without a win on October 17, when they secured a 1-0 victory over amateur side Lamelas in the Taca de Portugal third round, six days before claiming an emphatic 5-0 victory over Maritimo on their return to league action.

While next up is the daunting challenge of containing an opposing side yet to drop any points this season, Vitoria Guimaraes can draw encouragement from their recent upturn in form and also rely on home advantage, having picked up two wins and two draws from their four games at the Estadio Dom Afonso Henriques since August 23.

Off the back of a ninth-placed finish last season, a slow start to the campaign has seen Tiago Margarid’s men drop into 13th place in the Primeira Liga table with nine points from a possible 30, just two points above second-bottom Casa Pia.

While Vitoria Guimaraes will look to continue their resurgent form this weekend, a run of just one win and 12 defeats in their last 15 league meetings with this weekend’s visitors offers little room for optimism.

Having lost their opening three UEFA Champions League matches, Porto got off the mark in Europe in style on Wednesday when they thrashed Italian outfit Napoli 4-1 at the Estadio do Dragao.

The hosts looked set to drop points once again when Scott McTominay netted in the 43rd minute to cancel out Jan Bednarek’s 11th-minute opener, but Gabri Veiga, Jakub Kiwior and Samu Aghehowa scored in the final 20 minutes to sink the Italians.

Prior to that, Porto bounced back from consecutive UCL defeats with Primeira Liga victories over Gil Vicente and Estoril Praia on either side of a 1-0 home win over Academico Viseu in the Taca da Liga quarter-finals on October 28.

Attention now returns to the Primeira Liga, where they boast a five-point cushion at the top of the table, having kicked off the season with 10 wins from the opening 10 games, just three shy of an 87-year club record of 13 straight victories to start a new season.

Key to Porto’s flying start has been their defensive resilience, having conceded a league-low four goals so far, while 25 goals scored point to their firepower and quality to also kill off opponents at the opposite end of the pitch.

Whispers’ prediction: Vitoria Guimaraes 0-2 Porto

With just four goals conceded, Porto have displayed an impressive ability to keep opponents at arm’s length this season, and we predict BTTS – No at 4/5 (1.80).

At 14/25 (1.56), Porto are favoured by the bookmakers to secure all three points here, and with five of Guimaraes’ last six games seeing fewer than three goals scored, under 2.5 goals at 19/20 (1.95) is another tempting option.

HT/FT – 2/2 is priced at 7/5 (2.40), which is the high-value option for us, while the correct score market has a correct score of 0-2 at 13/2 (7.50).
