USA vs. Paraguay: What's the story?

Just like Mexico and Canada, the USA avoided a drawn-out qualification process thanks to their status as co-hosts, albeit a status that has been overshadowed by perpetual controversy over extortionate ticket prices, ICE concerns, and the scandal surrounding Somali referee Omar Artan.

However, Mauricio Pochettino has only sought to focus on on-field matters, albeit to little positive effect in 2026, as the United States enter their maiden World Cup 2026 match having won just one of their last four games, losing the other three.

The Stars and Stripes conceded at least two goals in defeats to Belgium, Portugal and Germany on home turf – although there is little shame in going down to those esteemed nations – as well as against a Sadio Mane-inspired Senegal, but Pochettino still masterminded a gritty 3-2 win over the deposed African champions.

Meanwhile, Paraguay are back on the world stage for the first time since making the quarter-finals in 2010, by virtue of claiming 28 points in CONMEBOL Qualifying to finish in the sixth and final automatic qualification spot.

It would be unfair to say that the White and Red sneaked into the top six, though, as they finished eight points clear of closest challengers Bolivia and claimed shock successes over all of Brazil, Uruguay and reigning World Cup champions Argentina en route to North America.

Paraguay have also won two of their three matches in 2026 – overcoming Greece and Nicaragua either side of a narrow defeat to Morocco – and Gustavo Alfaro's team pose quite the threat from dead balls, scoring the highest proportion of World Cup Qualifying goals from set-pieces of any South American nation (36%).
