Which notable countries have been eliminated in the knockouts?
Japan
Hajime Moriyasu’s Japanese side had high expectations going into their World Cup campaign and progressed to the knockout stages after one win and two draws helped them secure a second-place finish in Group F.
Despite taking the lead against Brazil after 29 minutes through Kaishu Sano, they were left heartbroken after Gabriel Martinelli’s dramatic 95th-minute winner sent the five-time winners out and into a knockout clash with Norway.
Germany
The most surprising shock of the tournament so far, Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany team saw their hopes of lifting the World Cup for a fifth time ended after they were stunned by Paraguay in a thrilling penalty shootout defeat.
They went behind just before half-time and never led in the shootout despite going first. It was the first game of the tournament to go all the way to penalties.
Netherlands
The second game of the tournament to go to penalties saw the end of the Netherlands and their World Cup ambitions.
The Dutch missed three of their spot-kicks before Morocco sealed the win, setting up a Round of 16 encounter in Houston with co-hosts Canada.
As a result of their poor early exit, Ronald Koeman stepped down as Netherlands head coach.
