  • Costa Rica suffered five defeats in their last six meetings with USA.
  • There were fewer than 11 corners in seven of USA’s last eight clashes with Costa Rica.

Correct score prediction: USA 2-0 Costa Rica

Costa Rica are currently on a five-match unbeaten run, with wins against Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, and Dominican Republic. Although they held their own against Mexico, Miguel Herrera's troops did not register a single shot on target in that game.

Compared to the teams Costa Rica have beaten in recent weeks, the USMNT will be a bigger fish to fry. The co-hosts had a perfect group stage campaign, scoring eight goals and conceding only once.

Interestingly, USA won five of the last six meetings between these teams, keeping four clean sheets in the process.

USMNT preview: A clean bill of health

The USMNT took care of business in the group phase of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup by finishing top of Group D with victories over Trinidad & Tobago, Saudi Arabia, and Haiti.

Nonetheless, there is still work left to do as the tournament narrows into the knockout stages, and the pursuit of an eighth title takes its first stern test here.

Mauricio Pochettino will be pleased to have no injury troubles ahead of this meeting. No changes are expected from his last lineup, as Patrick Agyemang continues upfront as the hitman, while Quin Sullivan, Malik Tillman and Brenden Aaronson offer creativity from the midfield and flanks.

Predicted lineup: Freese (GK), Freeman, Richards, Ream, Tolkin, Adams, Torre, Sullivan, Tillman, Aaronson & Agyemang.

Costa Rica preview: Eyeing their biggest win in over two years

Costa Rica rounded out their group stage campaign with a goalless draw against Mexico after recording wins over Suriname and Dominican Republic, but could only finish second due to an inferior goal difference.

Coach Miguel Herrera was able to keep the Mexicans at bay, as his five-man backline proved to be a tough wall to break through. Herrera is a strict adherent to the 5-3-2 formation that consistently occupies central territory, with forward-running midfielders supporting the two forwards.

While it is expected that Los Ticos will lie deep in their own half, they won't shy away from taking calculated risks, as this could be a game plan that helps knock their much-established opponents out of the competition.

With the influential Keylor Navas in goal stopping everything that comes his way, Manfred Ugalde and Alonso Martinez upfront could have the confidence needed to finish chances as they come.

Predicted lineup: Navas (GK), J. Mora, Calvo, Vargas, Mitchell, C. Mora, Aguilera, Galo, Alcocer, Ugalde & Martinez.
