Uruguay are in danger of failing to qualify for the knockout stage of the World Cup for the second consecutive time after their disappointing group-stage exit in 2022.
La Celeste kicked off their World Cup 2026 campaign with draws against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde and are second in Group H with one game remaining.
A victory for Marcelo Bielsa’s troops will not only guarantee them a place in the round of 32 but could also potentially secure the top spot in Group H. A draw might still be enough to finish second, but that would also require a stalemate in Cape Verde’s clash with Saudi Arabia.
Uruguay need a positive result from this fixture, as a defeat would leave them with two points and a negative goal difference, which would almost certainly eliminate them from qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams.
Coach Bielsa will have to make do without star midfielder Giorgian de Arrascaeta (broken collarbone) and defender Ronald Araujo (muscle), while regulars Rodrigo Bentancur and Mathias Olivera are each a booking away from suspension.
On the other hand, Spain's comfortable 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia leaves them at the top of Group H.
Interestingly, Luis De La Fuente’s men are not guaranteed a top-two finish; a defeat here and a Cape Verde victory over Saudi Arabia would drop them to third place. However, in that unlikely scenario, La Roja would still advance to the round of 32 as one of the best third-place sides.
A victory will secure the top spot for Spain, while a draw could still be enough to finish at the top of the group, depending on the outcome of Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia.
De La Fuente has no injury concerns ahead of this clash, but midfield maestro Pedri is a booking away from suspension.
It is important to note that Spain have never lost to Saudi Arabia. There have been 10 previous clashes between these sides, and La Roja won five and drew five of them. Interestingly, this will be their third encounter at the World Cup, and their previous two skirmishes in this competition ended in stalemates.

Whispers Predicts: Uruguay 0-2 Spain
At 13/25 (1.52), Spain are considered favourites by the bookmakers.
Given Uruguay's winless streak, coupled with their poor track record against Spain, we are confident that La Roja will claim all the spoils after 90 minutes.
Moreover, La Roja have not conceded in this competition, so we fancy under 0.5 Uruguay goals at 21/20 (2.05).
Under 2.5 total goals can be backed at 1/1 (2.00). This landed in three of Spain's last five matches.
