Andrea Maldera, the first foreign manager in Ukraine's history, made a positive start to life in his new role after beginning his tenure with two wins and a draw.

One of those victories and the solitary stalemate earned the Blue and Yellow four points and ensured they faced Northern Ireland on Friday night top of their Nations League group in League B, after being denied promotion in a playoff tie with Belgium.

Although they had scored just one goal across their first couple of fixtures in the competition, courtesy of Danylo Sikan against Monday's upcoming opponents, they were able to make it six matches unbeaten in the Nations League before falling to a 3-0 defeat against Michael O'Neill's side.

As for the visiting side, they entered their 2026-27 campaign in positive spirits after winning three and drawing one of their four previous games in 2026, having been denied a spot in a World Cup qualifying playoff following a dramatic Troy Parrott hat-trick.

However, they began with a 1-0 defeat at home, their first in Hungary since 2025 after a run of four matches without defeat, and were unable to come away from Northern Ireland with more than a point after playing out a goalless draw at Windsor Park, where Marco Rossi's side registered just one shot on target.

Since then, they faced Georgia back in Budapest and secured a 1-0 win to move to second in the group despite scoring just one goal during the international break.
