Hello and welcome to FootballWhispers' live commentary of the World Cup 2026 Group D showdown between Turkey and the USA, taking place at the Sofi Stadium in Ingelwood.
The matchday three showdown is essentially a dead rubber, as the USA are already assured of a first-placed finish in the section, while Turkey will bow out at the first hurdle.
Still, with the quality on show on both sides, it promises to be a cracker. Stay up to date with our live blog below!
Turkey vs. USA: Who can the Yanks meet in World Cup last 32?
Thanks to a comprehensive 4-1 thrashing of Paraguay in their opening game and a straightforward 2-0 success over Australia in their second fixture, the USA are not only going through to the last 32, but they will do so as group winners.
Even if there is a winner in the clash between Australia and Paraguay – both of whom sit three points behind the USA – neither can overtake Mauricio Pochettino's side, thanks to the head-to-head tie-breaker taking priority over goal difference.
As Group D winners, the USA will meet either the best third-placed team from Group B – confirmed to be Bosnia-Herzegovina – or Group I, which is likely to be deposed African champions Senegal.
The Stars and Stripes will then be on a collision course to meet another best third-placed team or the winner of Group G – likely to be Egypt – in the last 16, a stage they have not progressed past since reaching the quarter-finals of the 2002 edition.
Turkey memorably took home the bronze medal that year, but the Crescent-Stars have flattered to deceive on their first World Cup appearance since 2002, failing to live up to their dark horse label once again.
Owing to back-to-back defeats to Australia and Paraguay without finding the back of the net, Turkey have already been eliminated from the World Cup, another high-profile failure for the national team after their dismal showings at Euro 2016 and Euro 2020.
