Tunisia vs. Netherlands: What do Ronald Koeman's side need to make last 32?

After settling for a disappointing 2-2 draw in their opening game against Japan, the Netherlands turned up the heat in their second World Cup fixture, putting five past a Sweden side who had subjected Tunisia to that identical 5-1 scoreline just a few days beforehand.

While Japan also defeated Tunisia by four goals on matchday two, Oranje lead the way by virtue of having scored one more goal than the Samurai Blue, who take on Sweden at the same time on Thursday evening.

No matter what happens in the other Group F fixture, the Netherlands will be guaranteed a place in the last 32 with just a single point against Tunisia, as they are also one better off than Sweden in third place.

If the Netherlands match Japan's result against Sweden, the Dutch simply need to maintain their superior goals scored total – or steer clear on goal difference – to qualify in first place and set up a last-32 clash with Morocco.

Should Koeman's side slip down to second spot, their first knockout fixture would be against five-time winners Brazil, so the Netherlands will not be resting on their laurels despite facing an already-eliminated Tunisia side.

Oranje could still slip out of the top two if catastrophic circumstances arise, though; if Tunisia win, Sweden beat Japan and the Netherlands end up with a worse goal difference than the latter, Sweden will top the group with six points, followed by Japan with four and the Netherlands with four, although they would almost certainly still progress as one of the best-ranked third-placed teams in that scenario.
