He has reportedly cut short the club's attempts to open negotiations over a new contract that would have tied him down until June 2031. Van de Ven is said to be flattered by the interest from both La Liga heavyweights and is now considering a future away from London, as Spurs, sitting 16th in the Premier League, endure another disastrous season.
Real Madrid ahead of Barcelona in the race?
However, his long-term contract places Tottenham in a strong negotiating position this summer. According to the same source, the English club are demanding £100m (€114m) for their centre-back, an astronomical figure for a player valued at €65m by Transfermarkt.
That asking price would appear to rule Barcelona out of the running, with the Catalan club unable to invest such a sum. SportsBoom, who make no mention of interest from Liverpool and have ruled out Manchester United, indicate that Real Madrid are the frontrunners in the race for Van de Ven.
