Tottenham transfer news: Spurs receive bid for award nominee

Tottenham have received a €20m (£17.4m) bid for Souza, according to Santos insider outlet Diario do Peixe (via Sport Witness).

Spurs are ‘evaluating' the offer, as they could make a quick profit on the left-back after he arrived in January from Santos for around €15m (£13m).

The Brazilian club also inserted a 10% sell-on clause in the deal, meaning they could receive around €1.2m (£1m) should Souza move to Benfica.

Having signed a five-year deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it would be somewhat of a surprise to see Spurs part ways with Souza so soon.

Unfortunately for Souza, his gametime at Tottenham has been limited since moving in January, as he has only made four appearances in the Premier League so far.

This is despite him coming from Brazil with a bright reputation, and he has even been nominated for this year's Golden Boy award, which recognises the best young players in Europe.

Barcelona, Bayern Munich and clubs from the Netherlands had all monitored Souza's development when he was at Santos.

However, it seems as if his future at Spurs is uncertain, and he could end up moving to Benfica should their bid be accepted.

FW Verdict: Tottenham should let Souza go

Tottenham already have a plethora of options at left-back under Roberto De Zerbi, none more so than the experienced Andy Robertson, who they picked up on a free transfer following his release by Liverpool.

Destiny Udogie and Djed Spence are other options in that position, while Micky van de Ven, despite being a centre-back by trade, played that role for the Netherlands at the World Cup.

It begs the question just how limited Souza's minutes may be next season should he stay, and so Spurs should seriously consider Benfica's offer and let him go.

It would be a shame for a player only signed in January, but Tottenham have the chance to make a profit on someone who is unlikely to be a regular starter this campain.
