OGC Nice are on the hunt for defensive reinforcements in January, and a player who has fallen out of favour at Tottenham remains firmly on their shortlist.

With the return of Jean-Pierre Rivère and Claude Puel, key figures from the club's successful 2010s era, Nice are desperate to break free from the negative spiral that has plagued their 2025/26 season. The winter transfer window arrives at the perfect time, and to revitalise the project, the club's management want to prioritise strengthening their backline. The Ligue 1 side have even reportedly considered a move for Sergio Ramos, who is keen to return to Europe after leaving Mexico.

In addition to the former Real Madrid captain, Nice are also eyeing Ben Davies. The Spurs defender has played just 55 minutes since the start of the season. According to French newspaper L'Équipe, Nice will revive their interest in the Wales international. Davies was already approached last summer, but following Tottenham's Europa League triumph, his contract was immediately extended for another season despite being on the verge of becoming a free agent.

Nice face several hurdles in Ben Davies pursuit

While Davies is valued at just £4m on Transfermarkt, signing him won't necessarily be straightforward. Firstly, the Welsh defender earns a comfortable salary at Spurs which Nice cannot match. Furthermore, although the club enquired about him during the summer, recently appointed manager Claude Puel still needs to approve the move, which is far from certain.

Finally, Davies has suffered several injuries over the past two seasons. With Dante, Youssouf Ndayishimiye, Mohamed Abdelmonem, and Moïse Bombito already sidelined in defence, Nice must be particularly cautious in their recruitment. If the 32-year-old agrees to a pay cut and passes a medical, he could prove a crucial signing for Les Aiglons.
