Torreense made history in Europe last time out by becoming the first non top-flight side to win in this Europa League format.
The surprise Portuguese cup winners from last season are struggling domestically though, with just one win from six games in the second tier this campaign (D3, L2).
Luis Tralhao's side will also have to play their first-ever European home match away from their own stadium having not met UEFA requirements, and instead will play at the Estadio Dr. Magalhaes Pessoa.
Nuha Jatta is also suspended in a further blow for Torreense, who are already the underdogs here.
Sunderland's return to European football for the first time in over half a century was a pleasant one, as they won in front of their home fans.
Now on their travels, the Black Cats will be aiming for back-to-back wins in this competition.
Regis Le Bris' side are not in great form though themselves, losing their last three Premier League games.
Thomas Meunier and Brian Brobbey remain injury doubts too, on top of a long list of absentees for Sunderland.

Whispers predicts: Torreense 1-2 Sunderland
Sunderland are 43/100 (1.43) favourites, but while we agree with the bookies, we want to explore other bets.
With the Black Cats struggling to keep clean sheets on their travels, BTTS – Yes at 4/5 (1.80) holds value.
Enzo Le Fee has contributed to five goals in Sunderland's last six competitive away games (G2, A3), so Le Fee to score or assist at 10/11 (1.91) could also be worth backing.
Overall, we are predicting a Correct score – 1-2 at 15/2 (8.50), with eight of Sunderland's last nine competitive wins being by a one-goal margin.
> BTTS – Yes at 1.80 | Likelihood: High
> Le Fee to score or assist at 1.91 | Likelihood: High
> Correct score – 1-2 at 8.50 | Likelihood: Low
