The FIFA World Cup has always been a stage for football’s superpowers, but it is equally famous for the moments when outsiders rewrite the script. Every tournament produces at least one result that leaves fans, pundits and players in disbelief, proving that reputation counts for little once the whistle blows.
Some of the biggest World Cup upsets have come when part-time players have toppled global giants, while others have involved reigning champions crashing out against nations making their tournament debut.
There are also the rare occasions when an expected winner prevails, but in such astonishing fashion that the scoreline itself becomes one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history.
From the USA’s famous win over England in 1950 to Saudi Arabia stunning eventual champions Argentina in Qatar in 2022, Football Whispers takes a look at the ten greatest World Cup giant killings and surprise results ever seen.

1. USA 1-0 England (1950)
Still the benchmark for every World Cup surprise result, the USA’s victory over England in Belo Horizonte remains almost impossible to believe.
England arrived in Brazil as one of the favourites, while the Americans were a collection of part-timers – their squad included a mailman, a hearse driver and a paint-stripper. Joseph Gaetjens, a Haitian-born dishwasher, scored the only goal of the game with a diving header.
England were expected to win comfortably, and many newspapers even assumed the reported score was a mistake.
The USA did not progress from the group, but their win became the original World Cup giant-killing.
2. Cameroon 1-0 Argentina (1990)
Defending champions Argentina, inspired by Diego Maradona, were expected to begin Italia 90 with an easy victory. Instead, Cameroon produced one of the most fearless performances in World Cup history.
Francois Omam-Biyik scored the winner in Milan, and Cameroon somehow held on despite finishing the match with nine men after two red cards. The Indomitable Lions were not lucky either as for long periods, they were the better side.
Argentina recovered from the defeat to reach the final, where they lost to West Germany, while Cameroon went on an unforgettable run to the quarter-finals.
3. Senegal 1-0 France (2002)
Senegal were making their World Cup debut when they met reigning champions France in the opening game of the 2002 tournament. Almost nobody gave them a chance.
Instead, Pape Bouba Diop scored the winner in Seoul as Senegal defended brilliantly and counter-attacked with real pace. El Hadji Diouf constantly troubled France’s ageing defence, while the absence of the imperious Zinedine Zidane exposed the holders.
Even with exciting attacking stars such as Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet on the pitch, France could not respond.
The defeat set the tone for a disastrous campaign, with the champions finishing bottom of their group without scoring a goal.
4. Argentina 1-2 Saudi Arabia (2022)

Saudi Arabia’s victory over Argentina in Qatar instantly entered the conversation among the biggest upsets the World Cup has ever seen.
Argentina arrived at the tournament on a 36-match unbeaten run and were among the favourites to lift the trophy. Lionel Messi gave them an early lead from the penalty spot, and they appeared in complete control.
But Saudi Arabia stunned the world with two goals in five second-half minutes. Saleh Al-Shehri equalised before Salem Al-Dawsari curled home a remarkable winner.
Ranked 51st in the world, Saudi Arabia held on for a famous triumph. Remarkably, Argentina recovered from the shock and went on to win the World Cup.
5. Northern Ireland 1-0 Spain (1982)
Spain were tournament hosts in 1982 and expected to brush Northern Ireland aside in Valencia. Instead, Billy Bingham’s side produced the greatest result in their history.
Gerry Armstrong scored the only goal shortly after half-time, finishing brilliantly despite losing a boot in the process. Northern Ireland then defended heroically to preserve the lead.
The result helped Northern Ireland top the group, while Spain scraped through in second place. More than 40 years later, Armstrong’s strike remains one of the most celebrated moments in World Cup history.
6. South Korea 2-1 Italy (2002)
South Korea’s run to the semi-finals in 2002 was one of the stories of the tournament, but their last-16 victory over Italy was the moment that shocked the football world.
Italy seemed certain to progress after Christian Vieri put them ahead, and Gianluigi Buffon had already saved an early South Korean penalty. However, Seol Ki-Hyeon equalised late on to force extra time.
The match then descended into controversy, as Francesco Totti was sent off for simulation before Ahn Jung-Hwan scored the golden goal winner.
Italy were furious, but South Korea advanced to the quarter-finals and became the first Asian nation to reach the last four.
7. Bulgaria 2-1 Germany (1994)
Germany entered USA '94 as reigning world champions and one of the most dominant teams international football had ever seen. Bulgaria had never previously gone beyond the group stage.
When Lothar Matthaus scored from the penalty spot in the quarter-final, Germany appeared to be cruising into another semi-final. Instead, Bulgaria produced an extraordinary comeback.
Hristo Stoichkov equalised with a free-kick before Yordan Letchkov headed in the winner just three minutes later.
Germany were eliminated, while Bulgaria reached the semi-finals and Stoichkov finished the tournament as joint top scorer.
8. Netherlands 5-1 Spain (2014)
Spain against the Netherlands was expected to be one of the matches of the 2014 group stage, but nobody expected such a crushing scoreline.
La Roja were the defending champions and had dominated international football for six years. They even led through Xabi Alonso’s penalty, then everything collapsed.
Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben inspired the Netherlands to an astonishing 5-1 victory. Spain never recovered, losing heavily to Chile in their next match and crashing out in the group stage.
9. Germany 7-1 Brazil (2014)
This is the one rare exception on the list as Germany beating Brazil in the 2014 semi-final was not itself a major shock, but the scale of the victory was beyond belief.
Brazil were playing at home and dreaming of a sixth world title – even without Neymar and Thiago Silva, few could have imagined them conceding five goals in 29 minutes.
Germany ripped through the hosts at will as Thomas Muller, Toni Kroos and Miroslav Klose left Brazil shellshocked.
The humiliation remains the most extraordinary scoreline ever seen in a World Cup semi-final.
10. Ghana 2-1 USA (2006)
Ghana’s first-ever World Cup win came at the expense of the USA in Germany in 2006.
The Americans had reached the quarter-finals four years earlier and were expected to have too much quality for World Cup newcomers Ghana. Instead, the Black Stars played with far greater energy and belief.
Goals from Haminu Dramani and Stephen Appiah earned Ghana a famous victory and a place in the last 16.
With the 2026 World Cup set to be held in the USA, it remains one of the most memorable upsets involving the Americans.
