Here, Football Whispers counts down the best Premier League signings in Black Cats history, specifically their best five, ranked by their impact, longevity, and overall success story at the club.

5) Niall Quinn

Niall Quinn joined Sunderland from Manchester City in August 1996 for a transfer fee of £1.3m.

He was a key piece in the team's ascent and consolidation in the top flight around the turn of the millennium.

The towering Irishman was the ultimate target man, scoring a total of 67 goals and providing 37 assists for the club, with 29 goals and 14 assists coming in the Premier League.

Quinn's influence extended far beyond his playing days, as he later returned as manager and chairman to revitalise the club.

4) Lee Cattermole

From Wigan Athletic, defensive midfielder Lee Cattermole signed for Sunderland in a deal worth £6m in August 2009.

Cattermole then went on to become the heart and soul of Sunderland’s midfield for a decade. He was the epitome of grit and determination the club needed for its famous “great escapes” while serving as captain for extended stretches.

Cattermole amassed 258 total appearances and registered 11 assists during his 10-year career with Sunderland, becoming one of the club's all-time best signings before leaving by mutual consent in July 2019.

3) Darren Bent

After a social media post by Darren Bent accusing then-Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy of trying to disrupt his move to Sunderland, both clubs struck a £10m deal for the player in August 2009.

Arriving for a then-club-record fee, Bent was an instant sensation as he netted 24 Premier League goals in his debut 2009/10 campaign, a tally that accounted for nearly half of Sunderland's entire goal output that season, and he was named the club's Player of the Year.

Although leaving the club mid-season for Aston Villa in 2011 for £24m left a bitter taste for many, his sheer goalscoring rate, which included 36 goals and 5 assists in 63 total appearances for Sunderland, made Bent one of the club's all-time best signings.

2) Jermain Defoe

Jermain Defoe is widely regarded as one of Sunderland's best Premier League signings of all time.

Signed from Toronto FC in a swap deal for Jozy Altidore in January 2015, Sunderland trading an underperforming Jozy Altidore for Jermain Defoe stands as one of the club’s shrewdest transfer moves in modern history.

Defoe single-handedly kept the Black Cats in the Premier League across back-to-back seasons, scoring a total of 34 top-flight goals and bagging three assists in 87 league appearances, while earning 93 total appearances, 37 total goals, and four assists across all competitions.

The retired English international also holds the Premier League record for the most goals scored as a substitute (24 goals), with some of them coming as a Sunderland player.

1) Kevin Phillips

Without a doubt, Kevin Phillips is Sunderland's best Premier League signing of all time, and ‘Super Kev’ has the receipts to prove it.

Acquired from Watford in 1997 for a transfer fee of £325,000, Phillips would go on to become the most legendary player to ever don the Sunderland jersey in history.

During the 1999/2000 season, Super Kev took the top flight by storm, scoring 30 Premier League goals to win the European Golden Shoe, a feat no English player matched until Harry Kane decades later.

Phillips struck a deadly partnership with fellow striker Niall Quinn (who also made our best 5 list), which remains the benchmark for classic Premier League “big man, little man” strike pairings.

He is Sunderland's all-time top scorer with 130 goals in 235 appearances across all competitions. Out of those, he recorded 61 Premier League goals and 16 assists to also become the club's best scorer in the English top flight.
