Strasbourg endured one of their poorest pre-season journeys in recent years, losing six of their seven friendlies – four of them without scoring a single goal.
They carried that form onto their first Ligue 1 match of the campaign, as Marseille treated the Stade Velodrome crowd to a 4-0 demolition of Strasbourg.
Hugo Oliveira’s men failed to create a single big chance, ultimately suffering their joint-biggest opening-day defeat in Ligue 1 history.
Samir El Mourabet received a second-half red card in their opening day loss, with Ben Chilwell, Martial Godo, Ismael Doukoure, Maximiliano Oyedele and Joaquin Panichelli all sidelined with injuries.
In contrast, Lens have made an excellent start to their season. They beat PSG 1-0 to lift the French Super Cup for the first time in history, before going all out in Ligue 1.
