1/1

Sporting Lisbon have been near impenetrable at the Estadio Jose Alvalade this year, and given the gulf in quality between the two teams, we are backing them to get the better of a Braga side who have struggled for results in the league.

Sporting Lisbon and Braga return to action in the Portuguese Primeira Liga when they go head-to-head at the Estadio Jose Alvalade on Sunday. Both sides head into the weekend off the back of contrasting results in Europe, with the hosts losing 2-1 against Napoli in the Champions League while Braga secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Celtic in the Europa League.

FootballWhispers’ Sporting Lisbon vs Braga prediction takes a look at the chances of both teams picking up all three points at the Estadio Jose Alvalade this weekend.

Sporting Lisbon vs Braga prediction: Sporting Lisbon to make it four league wins on the trot

Key stats

  • Sporting Lisbon have led at half time in nine of their last 11 games against Braga, a run stretching back to July 2021.
  • Braga have conceded the opening goal in eight of their most recent 10 games against Sporting Lisbon, with a combined 38 goals scored across the 10 matches.
  • Sporting have lost just one of their 12 Primeira Liga home games in 2025 while picking up nine wins and two draws since the turn of the year.
  • Braga are unbeaten in their seven away matches across all competitions this season, picking up four wins and three draws so far.

Correct score prediction: Sporting Lisbon 3-1 Braga

While Braga have flown out of the blocks in the Europa League, they have struggled for results in the new Primeira Liga campaign and will be looking to find their feet this weekend.

However, Sporting Lisbon have been near impenetrable at the Estadio Jose Alvalade this year, and given the gulf in quality between the two teams, we are backing them to come out on top in front of their home supporters.

Sporting Lisbon preview: Top spot in sight for Rui Borges’s men

Sporting Lisbon failed to make it two wins from two in the Champions League on Wednesday as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Napoli when the two teams squared off in Italy.

Former Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund put the visitors to the sword at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona as he netted on either side of Luis Javier Suarez’s 62nd-minute equaliser to hand Napoli all three points.

Sporting Lisbon now turn their focus to the Primeira Liga, where they are on a three-game winning streak, seeing off Famalicao, Moreirense and most recently Estoril Praia, and have won six of their opening seven matches this term.

Borges’s men's only league defeat came against rivals Porto on August 30, when they were beaten 2-1 on home turf courtesy of second-half goals from Luuk de Jong and Williams Gomes.

With 18 points from the first 21 available, Porto currently sit second in the Primeira Liga standings, three points behind league leaders Porto, who are the only side with their 100% league record intact.

Predicted lineup: Silva (GK), Vagiannidis, Debast, Inacio, Araujo, Hjulmand, Morita, Trincao, Quenda, Goncalves & Suarez

Last five games

  • Napoli 2-1 Sporting Lisbon
  • Estoril Praia 0-1 Sporting Lisbon
  • Sporting Lisbon 3-0 Moreirense
  • Sporting Lisbon 4-1 Kairat Almaty
  • Famalicao 1-2 Sporting Lisbon

Braga preview: Aiming to carry on Europa League form

Having kicked off their European campaign with a 1-0 victory over Eredivisie outfit Feyenoord on September 24, Braga made it two wins from two in the Europa League on Thursday when they edged out Celtic 2-0 in Scotland.

Portuguese international Ricardo Horta opened the scoring at Celtic Park to hand Braga a 20th-minute lead before substitute Gabriel Martinez put the result beyond reach with an 85th-minute strike.

While Braga are flying high in the Europa League, they have struggled to hit their stride in the Primeira Liga, where they suffered a 1-0 defeat against Nacional on home turf last Sunday.

Since kicking off the league campaign with consecutive victories over newcomers Tondela and Alverca, Carlos Vicens's men have failed to taste victory in their subsequent five matches, losing twice and claiming three draws.

With nine points from a possible 21, Braga are currently seventh in the Primeira Liga standings, 12 points away from the top of the table already and six adrift of the top-four places.

Predicted lineup: Hornicek (GK), Lagerbielke, Niakate, Arrey-Mbi, Gomez, Moscardo, Moutinho, Lelo, Zalazar, Horta & Navarro

Last five games

  • Celtic 0-2 Braga
  • Braga 0-1 Nacional
  • Braga 1-0 Feyenoord
  • Vitoria de Guimaraes 1-1 Braga
  • Braga 0-1 Gil Vicente

With his equaliser against Napoli, Luis Suarez has found the back of the net in three back-to-back games for Sporting Lisbon, and the Colombian striker will be one to keep an eye on.

Having arrived from Spanish outfit Almeria in the summer, the 27-year-old has enjoyed a stellar campaign so far, netting 10 goals and setting up two more in 11 matches for clubs and country.

Suarez started on the bench at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, but he should return to the XI this weekend, forming the front three with Geovany Quenda and 27-year-old forward Pedro Goncalves.
