Sporting CP saw their perfect start to the Champions League campaign come to an end on Wednesday when they fell to a somewhat disappointing 3-2 loss against Austrian outfit LASK at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The Leoes kicked off their European quest with a 3-1 victory over Galatasaray on September 9, before defeating Lens 2-0 at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis on October 13, but goals from Christophe Lang, Sasa Kalajdzic and Krystof Danek saw LASK come away with a huge win in Portugal.

Head coach Rui Borges will urge his side to shake off their midweek defeat ahead of their return to action in the Primeira Liga, where Sporting CP are one of just three unbeaten sides so far this season, with their last league defeat coming on April 19, when they were beaten 2-1 by Benfica on home turf.

Having kicked off their league campaign with four wins and one draw from their opening five matches, consecutive stalemates against Famalicao and Arouca saw the Sporting CP drop four points at the end of September before bouncing back with a 3-1 comeback win over Braga on October 9 thanks to second-half strikes from Luis Javier Suarez, Rodrigo Zalazar and a 71st-minute own goal from Bernardo Fontes.

The 21-time Primeira Liga champions have picked up 18 points from the first 24 available to sit third in the league standings, level on points with fourth-placed Santa Clara and six adrift of league leaders Porto, who have won each of the eight games to start their title defence.

On the other hand, Academico Viseu were left spitting feathers in the Taca de Portugal last Sunday when they fell to a 1-0 loss against Campeonato de Portugal side CD Fatima to crash out of the cup race in the third round.

With nothing to separate the two sides heading into crunch time, 21-year-old striker Lucas Russo came up clutch for Fatima at the Estadio Papa Francisco, netting the all-important goal in the 84th minute to send the amateur side through to the next round.

Academico Viseu now turn their focus to the Primeira Liga, where they have turned their fortunes around since stumbling into the campaign, picking up four wins from their last four matches, most recently a 2-1 victory over Estoril Praia at the Estadio Municipal do Fontelo on October 10.

Making their return to the Portuguese top flight after a 37-year absence, Bruno Pinheiro’s men picked up just two points from their opening four matches, but successive victories over Gil Vicente, Vitoria de Guimaraes, Estrela Amadora and Estoril Praia have seen Academico surge into seventh place in the Primeira Liga standings, level on 14 points with Arouca and Gil Vicente.

While Academico can also take pride in their unbeaten away record in the league, next up is a trip to the Estadio Jose Alvalade, where their hosts have lost just once in their 13 league games in 2026, picking up 10 wins and two draws since the turn of the year.

Whispers’ prediction: Sporting CP 3-1 Academico Viseu

At 11/50 (1.22), Sporting CP are strong favourites to come out on top this weekend, and given their superior quality across the pitch, we are backing the Leoes to end Academico’s hot league streak in front of their home supporters.

There have been four goals scored in five of Sporting’s last eight Primeira Liga matches, and a goal range of 2-4 goals at 57/100 (1.57) is our second pick of the game, while we also fancy over 2.5 goals at 47/100 (1.47).

Sporting to win + BTTS – Yes is currently priced at 81/50 (2.62), which is perhaps the value bet for us, while the correct score market has a correct score of 3-1 at 9/1 (10.00).
