Football Whispers' Predictions for Everton vs Southampton

Two of the Premier League's current bottom three sides lock horns this weekend as Everton look to make the most of their home advantage against Southampton. The Toffees beat the Saints 2-1 in the pair's reverse league fixture earlier in the season and how Lampard could do with another 3pts to relieve some of the pressure that has been mounting on him of late.

Both Teams to Score

We can't predict the result of this game as it's too close to call but we are expecting there to be goals. Both teams have scored in four of the last seven league meetings between these two clubs, while each of Everton's last five competitive and non-competitive matches as well as four of Southampton's last six outings in league and cup have also ended with both teams getting on the scoreboard.

Over 2.5 Goals

We're predicting at least three goals to be scored on Saturday as two of the last three meetings between Everton and Southampton have ended the same way. Over 2.5 goals have been scored in four of the host's last five matches in all competitions as well as in four of Southampton's last six outings, so you can see just why we're backing goals at Goodison Park.

Let's take a look at the latest markets and odds ahead of Everton vs Southampton.

Everton odds: 13/10 (2.30) – 43.5%

Draw odds: 5/2 (3.50) – 28.6%

Southampton odds: 12/5 (3.40) – 29.4%

*all odds provided are the best price at the time of publication and come from various bookmakers and therefore the probabilities won't always add up to 100%.

Everton head into this game as the favourite to secure all 3pts but we believe the odds should be much closer than that as both teams have been performing poorly of late and this result could go either way. If you do want to back a First Goalscorer in this game then the bookmakers fancy Dominic Calvert-Lewin at 11/2 (6.50) – 15.4%. The England man has slowly been regaining his match fitness and had a goal disallowed in Everton's FA Cup defeat at Old Trafford last time out, so he's a good shout to score first in this game.

How will the teams lineup for this Premier League encounter?

Everton

The less said about Everton's last Premier League game the better. The Toffees put in a woeful performance, their worst in decades, as they lost 4-1 in their own backyard to a Brighton side that could have scored more if they wanted. Everton will be without the services of Patterson, Garner, Keane, Iwobi and Townsend this weekend, all through injury, but Gordan is back in the squad and will be hoping to fill the creative void left by Iwobi.

Predicted Lineup – Pickford (GK), Coleman, Godfrey, Tarkowski, Coady, Mykolenko, Gueye, Onana, Calvert-Lewin, Doucouré & Gray

Southampton

Southampton might have stunned everyone in midweek by beating Man City in the League Cup but their Premier League form has been poor. Last time out the Saints played host to fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest and went down 1-0. Southampton currently sit bottom of the Premier League table and head to Goodison Park this weekend without Livramento, Bella-Kotchap, Larios, Walcott and possibly McCarthy but new signing Orsic will be hoping to start the game.

Predicted Lineup – Bazunu (GK), Perraud, Lyanco, Walker-Peters, Salisu, Bella-Kotchap, Elyounoussi, Ward-Prowse, Lavia, Adams & Mara

Player to Watch: Domarai Gray

Gray has been Everton's best player this season and top scores for the Toffees with 5-goals in all competitions.

The former Leicester City man played really well against Man Utd in the FA Cup and his individual performances of late have given the Everton fans some hope that with a few more additions up front, they might be able to stay up this season.

Gray, 26, only cost Everton £1.5m when he signed from Leverkusen and while he hasn't been the most consistent player at the club, he is still one of their best players. Gray has been tasked with scoring more goals this season and when he plays closer to DCL that makes him more impactful on matches compared to when he is left out on the wing.

If Lampard uses Gray well this weekend, he could make the difference between defeat and victory.
