San Diego FC vs Vancouver Whitecaps prediction: First time’s the charm

Key stats

  • San Diego have won their previous three home games in a row.
  • Vancouver have won only one of their last four games, effectively drawing two inside 90 minutes and losing once.
  • Eight of the Whitecaps’ last nine matches saw both teams score.
  • Thomas Muller is the visitors’ danger man with nine goals in 11 appearances.

Correct score prediction: San Diego FC 2-1 Vancouver Whitecaps

Mikey Varas’s men have scored 13 goals across their last five games, averaging 2.6 goals per game. They have already broken records for the most points and number of wins secured in the regular season by a team in their expansion year. In both previous meetings between the sides, Vancouver were able to get some degree of success in scoring against the hosts, but SDFC are sure to make home advantage count on the day and punch their ticket to their first-ever MLS Cup final.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Fortune favours the hosts

  • HOME: 6/5 (2.2) – 45.5%
  • DRAW: 12/5 (3.4) – 29.4%
  • AWAY: 7/4 (2.75) – 36.4%

*odds from Ladbrokes, subject to change

With San Diego playing in front of their home fans, Ladbrokes has them down as slight favourites to win this match outright and inside 90 minutes with a 45.5% chance of victory. However, the visitors are not completely ruled out according to the odds and have a 36.4% chance of surprising the hosts. A draw, according to the bookmaker, is the least likely outcome inside regulation time.

Most recent H2Hs: Unbeaten San Diego

San Diego’s tenure in the MLS is still in its infancy, and as a result, there have only been two previous meetings between the teams. The corresponding fixture ended 1-1 back in July, when a 79th-minute equaliser cancelled Manu Duah’s own goal to rescue a point for the hosts. In the reverse meeting, SDFC were ruthless and ran out 5-3 winners.
