After six straight wins across all competitions, Borussia Dortmund appeared set for a seventh against Werder Bremen earlier this month, racing into a two-goal lead by the 85th minute only to somehow let it slip. That collapse was followed by a 1-0 defeat to Bodo/Glimt and, most recently, a goalless draw with Union Berlin.
While no lasting damage has been done, Niko Kovac’s side have hit a bump in the road and must regroup quickly to avoid a deeper rut, especially given their recent lethargy.
Since the introduction of the new Champions League format, Die Schwarzgelben have never secured automatic qualification for the last 16 as one of the top eight teams. Tuesday’s trip to Sabah – arguably their most favourable fixture on paper – is exactly the kind of match where maximum points are essential if they are to break that pattern this season.
Having scored in 10 consecutive competitive matches before their last Champions League outing against Bodo/Glimt, Dortmund have now failed to find the net in back-to-back games for the first time since January 2025. They must rediscover their attacking spark to come away with a win in Azerbaijan.
Former Golden Boot winner Serhou Guirassy has scored each of his last nine Champions League goals at home, and Dortmund will need their talisman to rediscover his scoring touch on the road.
One of four teams, alongside Como, LASK, and Viking FK, making their Champions League debut this season, Sabah have given a decent account of themselves so far, most notably by beating Slavia Prague in their maiden home game last time out.
Second-half goals from Kaheem Parris and Joy Lance Mickels secured arguably the biggest win in club history for Valdas Dambrauskas's side, who are now unbeaten in five matches across all competitions either side of that Slavia victory, having followed up with a 4-0 demolition of Qabala on Saturday.
Aside from their 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford, the Owls have looked solid defensively for much of the campaign and head into their next European assignment on a run of three consecutive clean sheets and four in their last five matches.
With a huge clash against Qarabag – the side they dethroned to become champions last season – coming after the Dortmund game, Sabah are entering a pivotal run that could go a long way toward shaping the trajectory of their season.

Whispers predicts: Sabah 1-3 Borussia Dortmund
Sabah come into Tuesday's match in excellent form, and the prospect of facing an out-of-sorts Dortmund side offers real hope of a second consecutive Champions League victory. However, we expect Dortmund’s quality to prevail at 3/10 (1.30).
Sabah have failed to score in only one home game since the start of May, so BTTS – Yes at 3/4 (1.75) looks a strong selection.
Six of Sabah’s last seven matches have produced no more than 10 corners, making under 10 corners at 1/1 (Evens) an appealing value pick.
> Match result — Dortmund to win at 3/10 (1.30) | Likelihood: Likely
> BTTS – Yes at 3/4 (1.75) | Likelihood: Probable
> Under 10 corners at 1/1 (Evens) | Likelihood: Likely
