RB Leipzig have a chance to secure Champions League football when they welcome St Pauli to the Red Bull Arena for a high-stakes Bundesliga clash this Saturday afternoon.

Die Roten Bullen are just one win away from sealing a top-three finish and confirming their return to the European elite.

The Kiezkicker, on the other hand, have got two games left to save their season and escape the automatic relegation spots.

Saturday’s game comes at a time of mourning for the city of Leipzig, which experienced a deadly car attack last Monday that claimed two lives.

Die Roten Bullen will honour the victims by wearing black armbands at the Red Bull Arena, while the fans have cancelled their planned march and are set to replace their normal flags for black and white ones.

RB Leipzig head coach Ole Werner was celebrating his birthday on the day of the attack, and his response to the tragedy was an emotional one during the pre-match press conference.

Werner admitted he is expecting Saturday’s “special atmosphere” to give his players a boost as they look to secure a podium finish in the Bundesliga.

Victory this weekend would secure Champions League football, though Die Roten Bullen must first recover from a heavy 4-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen last weekend.

That thumping not only snapped Leipzig’s five-match winning run but also marked their first game since January in which they conceded four goals.

Werner’s men are expected to deliver an improved defensive performance with the return of defender David Raum, who is back from his slight groin issue.

The same cannot be said about Ezechiel Banzuzi and Castello Lukeba, who are expected to miss out due to injuries.

St Pauli are also heading into the weekend with a busy injury list that currently includes Manolis Saliakas, Karol Mets, Mathias Pereira Lage and James Sands.

On a positive note, striker Ricky-Jade Jones has made an early return to training, and the Englishman could feature in St Pauli’s final game of the season against Wolfsburg.

Head coach Alexander Blessin certainly needs more quality in attacking areas given his men have only scored four goals across their last two months.

St Pauli have the worst attacking record in the Bundesliga, and that has been one of the driving factors behind their ongoing eight-match winless run.

The lack of intensity in games has also been highlighted by Blessin as a serious issue, with his men producing a mere 40% tackle success rate in the first half of their 2-1 defeat to Mainz last weekend.

In terms of the current situation in the table, St Pauli are 17th after being overtaken by Wolfsburg last Sunday.

The two teams are level on points, meaning the battle to avoid automatic relegation could very well be settled during their head-to-head clash next weekend.
