John Souttar's future at Rangers appears increasingly uncertain, with the Scotland international attracting strong interest from several Championship clubs ahead of the new season.

According to the Scottish Sun, the 29-year-old centre-back is expected to leave Ibrox this summer despite signing a contract extension earlier this year, and a growing list of English second-tier clubs are monitoring his situation.

Sheffield United are understood to be leading the race, while Watford, Cardiff City, Leicester City and Swansea City have also been credited with an interest in the experienced defender.

Souttar has been left out of Rangers' recent plans as Derek McInnes reshapes his squad, with the club already bringing in a number of new signings during the current transfer window.

Talks over a move to England are reportedly progressing, suggesting his four-year stay in Glasgow could soon come to an end.

Rangers transfer news: Why John Souttar is attracting EFL interest

Souttar offers exactly the kind of experience many Championship clubs are searching for.

The former Hearts defender has amassed significant experience in both the Scottish Premiership and European competition, while also becoming an established Scotland international. His leadership, aerial ability and composure on the ball make him an attractive option for clubs with promotion ambitions.

Sheffield United's interest is particularly understandable given manager Chris Wilder's long-standing admiration for the defender, although competition for his signature appears to be intensifying as the transfer window progresses.

With Rangers actively reducing the size of their squad, Souttar's departure would also free up space for McInnes to continue his rebuild ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

Rangers transfer news: Where could Souttar end up?

Sheffield United remain the favourites to secure Souttar's signature, with discussions believed to be ongoing between the player and the Yorkshire club.

However, Swansea City's recent emergence, along with reported interest from Watford, Cardiff City and Leicester City, means Rangers could yet receive multiple offers before the window closes.

Given Souttar's contract situation and Rangers' willingness to sanction a sale, the coming days could prove decisive in determining his next destination.

FW verdict: Now is the right time to cash in on John Souttar

While John Souttar has been a dependable servant for Rangers, this feels like a sensible moment for both parties to move on.

McInnes is building a new-look squad and appears to have identified different defensive options for the future. Meanwhile, Souttar still has plenty to offer at Championship level, where his experience and physical presence could make an immediate impact for a promotion-chasing side.

If Rangers can secure a respectable transfer fee while reducing their wage bill, the move would represent good business as they continue to reshape the squad.
