Seeking their first away win since August, Birmingham City journey to the Deepdale Stadium to face Preston North End in round 11 of the Championship on Tuesday. The Lilywhites, meanwhile, are one of just three sides unbeaten at home in the league this season and will be looking to extend this fine run of form.

Preston vs Birmingham prediction: Lilywhites to open the scoring
Key stats
- Preston have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five games against Birmingham, conceding five goals and scoring five since a goalless draw in September 2021.
- Birmingham have conceded the opening goal in six of their last eight matches across all competitions, with a combined 19 goals scored across the eight matches.
- Preston are unbeaten in each of their five Championship home matches this season, picking up three wins and two draws while scoring seven goals and keeping three clean sheets so far.
- Birmingham have failed to win their most recent four away games, picking up one point from a possible 12 since August’s 2-1 victory at Blackburn Rovers.
Correct score prediction: Preston 2-1 Birmingham
It has been a challenging return to life in the Championship for Birmingham, who have failed to win seven of their last eight games — a run which has also seen them crash out of the EFL Cup. While Preston have struggled for consistency on their travels, they will take pride in their strong display on home turf, where they have picked up 11 points from their five games so far.
While we expect Birmingham to go all out in search of a pick-me-up, we predict the Lilywhites will make the most of their home advantage and secure maximum points, albeit by the odd goal.

Both sides head into Tuesday’s clash aiming to bounce back from defeats at the weekend, with Preston narrowly losing to West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns while Birmingham dropped all three points at home to Hull City.

Preston preview: Aiming to extend impressive home run
Preston were made to rue their lack of sting in attack at the weekend when they fell to a 2-1 defeat against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.
Michael Johnston and Northern Irish international Isaac Price hit the target to put West Brom in a two-goal lead before substitute Michael Smith pulled one back for the visitors in the 78th minute.
Prior to that, Preston were on a run of five consecutive games without defeat, claiming two wins and three draws, and had lost just one of their 10 league matches since their woeful run of four straight defeats back in April.
Paul Heckingbottom’s men have picked up four wins and four draws from their 10 Championship matches so far to collect 16 points and sit eighth in the table, level on points with seventh-placed Bristol City.
Preston could also surge into third place with a win on Tuesday, and they will be backing themselves to get the job done as they return to the Deepdale Stadium, where they are unbeaten in their five matches, claiming the joint second-most points so far (11).
Predicted lineup: Iversen (GK), Vukcevic, Hughes, Gibson, Storey, Small, Devine, Whiteman, Armstrong, Osmajic & Dobbin
Last five games
- West Bromwich Albion 2-1 Preston
- Preston 2-0 Charlton
- Hull 2-2 Preston
- Preston 0-0 Bristol City
- Derby 0-1 Preston
Birmingham preview: Key defender set to miss out as Championship struggles continue
Birmingham failed to find their feet in the league on Saturday as they fell to a 3-2 defeat against Hull City when the two sides squared off at the St Andrew's Stadium.
Stansfield restored parity with a 27th-minute strike to cancel out Jack Robinson’s 11th-minute own goal before halving the deficit with a 96th-minute penalty after Regan Slater and Joe Gerhard hit the target to put Hull City back in a commanding lead.
With that result, Chris Davies’s men have gone four back-to-back matches without a win, losing twice and claiming two draws since scraping a 1-0 victory over Swansea on September 20.
Having kicked off the season on a positive note with two wins and one draw from the first three league matches, Birmingham appear to have run out of steam, claiming just one win from the subsequent seven games while losing four and picking up two draws.
The Blues, who gained promotion from League One last term, have picked up 12 points from their 10 Championship matches so far to sit 17th in the table, level on points with Watford and Southampton.
While Birmingham will be looking to pick up a morale-boosting result on Tuesday, they will have to cope without the services of 32-year-old defender Robinson, who is suspended after picking up a red card against Hull at the weekend.
Predicted lineup: Beadle (GK), Iwata, Klarer, Cashin, Cochrane, Paik, Leonard, Anderson, Roberts, Gray & Stansfield
Last five games
- Birmingham 2-3 Hull
- Wrexham 1-1 Birmingham
- Birmingham 2-2 Sheffield Wednesday
- Coventry 3-0 Birmingham
- Birmingham 1-0 Swansea
Player to watch — Jay Stansfield

Despite their recent poor run of results, Jay Stansfield has been a bright spark for Birmingham this season and the 22-year-old will certainly be one to keep an eye on.
Following his brace against Hull at the weekend, Stansfield has now netted four goals in the last two games and has six to his name across all competitions this season while also chipping in one assist in nine games.
The English striker has started all but one of Birmingham’s 10 league matches and should spearhead the attack once again, alongside Patrick Roberts and 29-year-old Demarai Gray
