Portsmouth vs Swansea prediction: Can it match the 2-2 thriller last time?

Key Stats:

  • Portsmouth have scored just five in their last five, while Swansea have scored 10.
  • Only Cardiff and Hull have worse home records than Portsmouth.
  • Both sides have just one clean sheet in their last five games.

Correct score prediction: Portsmouth 1-2 Swansea

We're backing resurgent Swansea to continue their advance on the playoffs with an away win, further imperilling Pompey's survival hopes.

The visitors have won their last two, while Portsmouth have lost their last two and have not made Fratton Park a fortress this season.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Away advantage

  • HOME: 15/8 (2.88) – 34.8%
  • DRAW: 12/5 (3.40) – 29.4%
  • AWAY: 7/5 (2.40) – 41.7%

*odds from Ladbrokes, subject to change

Swansea are the expected winner of this game, albeit by a narrow margin, with a win probability of 41.7%. Like the bookmakers, we think this'll be a tight game, but that Swansea will emerge victorious.

Most recent H2Hs: Honours even

Following Portsmouth's relegation to League One, and Swansea's spell in the Premier League, the last meeting between these two sides before this season came back in 2011.

The points were shared at the Liberty Stadium in November, though Swansea had the better of the play.

Portsmouth preview: Can they rely on home advantage?

One silver lining for Portsmouth is that 10 of their 13 home points have come in their last four games at Fratton Park.

They will hope to stop the rot on home soil, following a pair of away defeats to Watford and Bristol City.

Another source of hope for Pompey are games in hand, with one or two over their relegation rivals, meaning their 23rd place in the table is a little deceptive.

Swansea preview: Two on the spin

Swansea's nine points from their last five is better tally than all but four clubs in the Championship, as the Swans look to build on their solid Championship status.

Luke Williams' side are defensively resilient. They have only scored three more than their hosts, but have conceded 15 fewer. That is the main reason for their current ninth spot.

The main absentee for Swansea will be midfielder Goncalo Franco, who suffered a gruesome face injury last time out against Luton.

Liam Cullen has been Swansea's leading light this season – Photo by imago/Paul Jenkins

Player to watch: Liam Cullen

Our player to watch in this one is Swansea's Liam Cullen. The Welsh international has spent much of his career as a centre-forward, but is enjoying a great season in a more withdrawn role.

Cullen was first fielded deeper in October, but has really hit his stride of late, with four goals in his last five games.
