Porto preview: Eyeing their third consecutive victory

The Dragons had a poor campaign in Group A of the FIFA Club World Cup, exiting the competition with two draws and one defeat. Since then, they've registered back-to-back preseason wins going into this contest.

Entering the new campaign, Porto's ambition will be to return to the pinnacle of Portuguese football, as they last won the top flight in the 2021-22 season.

Coach Francesco Farioli will leverage on the experience and leadership qualities of Jan Bednarek, who recently joined the team on a €7.5 million deal. The Polish centre-back is expected to directly slot into their defence as they mark their first game of the season on Monday night.

Diogo Costa, who played a pivotal role in Portugal's Nations League success in June, will take his place between the sticks, while top scorer Samu Aghehowa leads the line for the hosts.

Predicted lineup: A. Costa (GK), D. Costa, Perez, Bednarek, Prpic, Froholdt, Varela, Veiga, Pepe, Sainz & Aghehowa.

Vitoria Guimaraes preview: A clean bill of health

Vitoria were only three points behind the European spots last season; they will look to do better this time, having strengthened their ranks massively this summer.

Preparations were in high gear during the preseason, as they engaged in 10 matches to bring themselves up to speed, and with no fresh injuries to bother Luis Pinto, the former Tondela manager is expected to start his strongest XI here.

Predicted lineup: Charles (GK), Maga, Borevkovic, Nobrega, Mendes, G. Silva, Handel, T. Silva, Santos, Camara & Felix.

Pepe set up the only goal in Porto's victory over Atletico Madrid last time out. In the last three encounters between these sides, the Brazilian midfielder scored in two and was injured in the first half of the other. It will be interesting to see how he performs on Monday night.
