Porto enter the new season determined to defend the Primeira Liga crown after producing one of the club's most consistent league campaigns in recent years.
Francesco Farioli guided the Dragons to the title, securing direct qualification for this season's Champions League league phase, while the Italian also oversaw an impressive Europa League run to the quarter-finals last season.
Preparations for the new campaign began early in July, allowing Farioli valuable time to integrate new arrivals as president Andre Villas-Boas continued backing the long-term project rather than pursuing major squad changes.
The Dragons already have their hands on a trophy this season, defeating Torreense 1-0 in the Super Cup last Saturday.
Samu Aghehowa remains Porto's leading attacking threat after scoring 13 league goals and 20 in all competitions last season, and the Spanish striker will again spearhead the champions' attack.
Alverca exceeded expectations during their first season back in the Primeira Liga by finishing 11th after completing successive promotions from Portugal's third tier.
However, Custodio Castro, who led the side last season has since been replaced with Sergio Ferreira, who will look to secure survival comfortably as well.
Away fixtures against the league's elite proved particularly difficult last season, and that trend was reflected in a 3-0 defeat at Porto last season.
While Alverca have established themselves as a competitive top-flight side, another trip to the Dragao represents one of the toughest assignments on the Portuguese calendar.
