Having scraped promotion to the top flight, Paderborn’s start to life in the Bundesliga has been anything but smooth. They have managed just one win from their opening six matches, most recently settling for a 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen.
While a draw away from home looks respectable for a newly promoted side, Daniel Thioune’s men will feel it was two points dropped rather than one gained, having led by two goals at half time at the Weserstadion.
Level on points with 15th-placed Schalke, Die Ostwestfalen could finish the weekend outside the relegation zone with a positive result. However, they must tighten up defensively after conceding five big chances last time out en route to extending their run of matches without a clean sheet to five.
With blanks drawn in four of their six Bundesliga clashes this term, Paderborn will also need to start finding the back of the net on a more consistent basis; their five goals scored currently rank second-lowest in the league behind Schalke.
Saturday’s hosts will be looking for more from their attacking summer signings, with Rayan Philippe, Marvin Pieringer, and Gabriel Vidovic all yet to open their accounts this season.
After three straight defeats by a combined score of 12-0 to start the season, Hamburg needed a change in fortunes quickly. Their 2-1 triumph over Koln on matchday four sparked a revival, ushering in a run of four consecutive victories.
While a 3-2 triumph away at Hoffenheim is widely regarded as Hamburg's best display of the season under Marlin Polzin so far, their most recent win was equally impressive. Stuttgart had won both of their matches after the international break without conceding prior to Saturday’s trip to the Volksparkstadion.
Not since August 2017 have Die Rothosen won three Bundesliga matches in a row, and another victory this weekend would give Polzin’s side real momentum. Remarkably, Polzin is closing in on his 70th game as a manager at just 35 years old.
However, Hamburg have struggled against Paderborn in recent years, failing to win any of the last five meetings and conceding in 11 consecutive encounters dating back to May 2019.
No team in the division has scored a higher percentage of their goals in the first half (80%) than Saturday’s hosts. The visitors must be wary of being caught out early, though they too have developed a habit of starting games on the front foot.

Whispers predicts: Paderborn 1-1 Hamburger SV
Hamburg have averaged three goals conceded per Bundesliga away game this season and have struggled defensively on their travels, but we expect them to earn a point this weekend at 11/4 (3.75).
Eight of the last 10 meetings between these sides have seen both teams score, and it is hard to bet against a repeat this weekend at 1/2 (1.50).
With two goals and an assist in his last two outings, Miro Muheim is a man in form, making his 3/1 (4.00) option to score or assist look enticing.
> Draw at 11/4 (3.75) | Likelihood: Probable
> BTTS – Yes at 1/2 (1.50) | Likelihood: Probable
> Miro Muheim to score or assist at 3/1 (4.00) | Likelihood: Outsider
