Nottingham Forest's dreams of winning the Europa League and playing in the Champions League next season came to an abrupt end on Thursday night with a 4-0 loss at Villa Park.
The battering at the hands of their Midlands rivals will take some getting over, particularly as Forest had held a 1-0 advantage on aggregate prior to kick-off following an impressive performance at the City Ground.
Their domestic form in recent weeks has been excellent, though, which means Premier League football is at least secured for next season. While that may not seem like a silver lining at the moment, the Reds did look bang in trouble prior to Vitor Pereira's appointment in February.
Pereira's job now is to pick his team up off the floor to finish the season strongly. Premier League safety may be all but secured, but a loss on Sunday could see them move within three points of the drop zone if West Ham and Spurs both win their respective matches this weekend.
Pereira was coy about Morgan Gibbs-White's chance of playing a part this weekend, while Ola Aina and Murillo are also doubts.
As for Newcastle, there will be a huge sense of relief following their victory over Brighton last weekend. It was their first win at St James' Park in over two months, and the plan now will be to build on that to end a disappointing season strongly.
Eddie Howe's future is likely to be a hot topic of conversation this summer, but the former Bournemouth man will feel that he has enough credit in the bank to be given next season to respond.
Howe was forced to answer some uncomfortable questions about Anthony Gordon's future at the club in his pre-match press conference, with the winger now linked with a sensational move to Bayern Munich before the World Cup.
Gordon is expected to feature for Newcastle on Sunday, but Lewis Miley's season is now over after fracturing his fibula in training. Tino Livramento and Fabian Schar are also expected to sit out the final three games.
