Here are our AFCON predictions for the first of Wednesday's Semi-Finals between Nigeria and South Africa. Nigeria were one of the pre-tournament favourites so it's not a surprise to see the Super Eagles reaching this stage of AFCON 2023, but South Africa were never expected to be one of the contenders and their mostly home-based squad has worked wonders to reach the Semi-Finals.

Nigeria vs South Africa prediction – Betting tips & odds

Hot Tip – Nigeria to Win

  • Nigeria ran out 2-1 winners the last time they locked horns with South Africa back in 2019.
  • Nigeria are yet to lose a single game at AFCON 2023 and have only conceded one goal in the competition.

Another reason why we're backing Nigeria to win this game is that South Africa lost their opening game 2-0 against Mali and have failed to score in three of their games at AFCON 2023.

Nigeria vs South Africa team news

Nigeria

Nigeria put in another strong defensive display in the quarter-finals against Angola. In the end, a solitary goal in the forty-first minute from Ademola Lookman proved enough for the Super Eagles to progress through to the semi-finals. Backup goalkeeper Stanley Bobo Nwabali started against Angola and kept a clean sheet so José Peseiro may well stick with the 27-year-old who plays his club football for Chippa United in South Africa.

Predicted Lineup: Nwabali (GK), Troost-Ekong, Ajayi, Aina, Bassey, Sanusi, Onyeka, Iwobi, Simon, Osimhen & Lookman

South Africa

South Africa played out a tight and tense quarter-final against Cape Verde and needed a penalty shoot-out to decide the outcome. When it came to the spot-kicks, neither side covered themselves in glory but South Africa did just enough to win 2-1 after Cape Verde missed four of their opening five penalties and South Africa scored two of their first four. Thapelo Morena was replaced just after the hour mark against Cape Verde, being replaced by Thapelo Maseko, but we still expect Morena to start against Nigeria.

Predicted Lineup: Williams (GK), Kekana, Morena, Mvala, Mudau, Zwane, Modiba, Sithole, Mokoena, Tau & Makgopa

Player to Watch: Ademola Lookman

Atalanta's Ademola Lookman has made himself a national hero with his performances for the Super Eagles at AFCON 2023.

The 26-year-old top scores for Nigeria at AFCON 2023 with three goals, outshining Victor Osimhen who many had predicted would claim the Golden Boot award at the end of the competition but that honour looks set to go to Emilio Nsue of Equatorial Guinea who netted five goals before his team were eliminated.

Lookman will fancy his chances of scoring another couple of goals before AFCON 2023 comes to an end so don't bet against the former Charlton, Everton, Fulham and Leicester City man scoring against South Africa on Wednesday.
