Newcastle to score under 1.5 goals

Newcastle have scored just three goals in their last five Premier League matches.

Newcastle will take on Liverpool in the final Premier League match this weekend on Monday, 25 August.

The match at St James' Park will have a bit of extra needle this season due to the ongoing Alexander Isak transfer saga, with Liverpool still trying to bring the Swede to Anfield.

Beyond that subplot, the match is a chance for the visitors to lay down an early marker. Winning at St James' Park is no easy task, so if they can take all three points away from Monday night, then it will be an early blow to the other title challengers.

As part of this week's round of Premier League betting tips, check out our Newcastle vs Liverpool prediction below.

Newcastle vs Liverpool prediction: Reds to take advantage of the situation

Key Stats

  • Newcastle have failed to score a single goal in any of their last three Premier League matches.
  • Newcastle haven't won any of their last nine matches across the end of last season, pre-season, and the beginning of the new season.
  • Three goals or more have been scored in six of Liverpool's last seven matches.

Correct score prediction: Newcastle 1-2 Liverpool

While the crowd will be up and Newcastle will start quickly, Liverpool have too much quality and poise to let that get to them. The hosts are struggling for goals and will start the match without a recognised striker. Liverpool, meanwhile, have scored two or more goals in both of their competitive outings this season and have enough quality to do the same again here.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Newcastle are the underdogs

  • HOME: 23/10 (3.30) – 30.3%
  • DRAW: 14/5 (3.80) – 26.3%
  • AWAY: 1/1 (2.00) – 50%

*odds from Ladbrokes, subject to change

The Newcastle vs Liverpool odds are weighted in favour of the visitors, but there is still plenty of value on a Liverpool win with top bookies pricing an away win around evens. Ladbrokes have given the Reds a 50% chance of winning the match, while Newcastle have been given just a 30.3% chance of picking up a home victory.

Most recent H2Hs: Liverpool domination

Liverpool's price of 1/1 looks remarkable when you consider they are unbeaten across their last 17 Premier League matches against Newcastle (12 wins, 5 draws). What will give the Magpies some confidence, though, is the fact that they won the most recent encounter, the Carabao Cup final back in March.

Newcastle preview: No sign of Isak

Alexander Isak will not be at St James' Park on Monday, and probably for the best. Aside from the absent Swede, Eddie Howe should have a full squad to choose from with Joe Willock back in training. Jacob Ramsey could make his debut, and the former Villa man's running power could prove to be advantageous on Monday, given how Liveprool struggled in transition against Bournemouth.

Predicted lineup: Ramsdale (GK), Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento, Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton, Elanga, Ramsey, Gordon

Liverpool preview: Problems at full-back

It was a league debut to forget for Jeremie Frimpong last week, as the Dutchman was forced off with a hamstring injury and will now miss a month of action. His potential replacements are Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez, but neither man is classed as 100% fit and available, which gives Arne Slot a selection headache.

Predicted lineup: Alisson (GK), Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo, Ekitike

Player to watch: Hugo Ekitike

Hugo Ekitike has had a great start to his Liverpool career, scoring two goals in his first competitive appearances for the Reds. The former Frankfurt striker will be someone that Newcastle will be desperate to prevent from scoring on Monday night, as he rejected a move to St James' Park earlier in the summer.
