Newcastle to win

Newcastle have won eight of their last nine home games.

Newcastle and Chelsea return to Premier League action after winning their respective Carabao Cup quarter-final ties in midweek. Indeed, the Magpies beat Fulham 2-1 at home to set up a semi-final tie with Manchester City, while Chelsea beat Cardiff 3-1 in Wales to face a semi-final showdown against either Arsenal or Crystal Palace.

However, Newcastle were losers in the Premier League last time out, suffering a painful 1-0 defeat away at rivals Sunderland in the Wear-Tyne derby. They will be hoping to bounce back at St. James' Park at Saturday lunchtime against a Chelsea side that beat Everton 2-0 at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

Newcastle vs Chelsea prediction: Magpies to fly to victory?

Key stats

  • Newcastle are unbeaten in nine home games in all competitions.
  • Chelsea have won just once in four away matches across all competitions.
  • Newcastle are also unbeaten in five home H2Hs, winning four.

Correct score prediction: Newcastle 2-1 Chelsea

With Newcastle so strong at home, we are backing them to pick up all three points here. Chelsea can be vulnerable on their travels, and showed some fragilities at League One Cardiff in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Bookmakers finding it tough to call

  • HOME: 13/8 (2.63) – 38.1%
  • DRAW: 5/2 (3.50) – 28.6%
  • AWAY: 6/4 (2.50) – 40.0%

*odds from Ladbrokes, subject to change

As shown by the implied probabilities, the bookmakers can hardly separate the two sides, with Chelsea only slight favourites. A draw can also be backed at just under 29%.

Most recent H2Hs: Newcastle strong at SJP

As mentioned before, Newcastle are unbeaten in five previous meetings at St. James' Park, winning four of them. Coupled up with their recent great form on home soil, the Magpies should be confident of getting another positive result.

Player to watch: Lewis Miley

With injuries at the back for Newcastle, Lewis Miley could be given a start as a makeshift right-back. That is where he ended up against Fulham last time out, as the midfielder scored the winner to send the Magpies through to the Carabao Cup quarter-final.
