Newcastle transfer news: Magpies fail again in attempt to sign £86m striker

Newcastle look set to lose out on another attacking target this summer, with Spanish striker Samu Aghehowa showing clear signs he will remain in Portugal despite strong interest from the Magpies.

The 21-year-old, who was previously on Chelsea’s radar, has been in prolific form recently. Aghehowa scored 27 goals last season and is focused on helping Porto in their quest for the Primeira Liga title.

Another blow for Newcastle’s attacking recruitment

According to Portuguese outlet Record, Aghehowa is aware of Newcastle’s interest but remains committed to Porto’s current campaign. This contrasts with Newcastle’s ambitions to bolster their frontline after missing out on several targets during the transfer window.

Among those who slipped through the club’s fingers are Benjamin Sesko, who opted for Manchester United, Liam Delap, now at Chelsea, Hugo Ekitiké, who signed for Liverpool, and Bryan Mbeumo, another United recruit.

The situation is further complicated by Porto’s firm stance. The club signed Aghehowa just a year ago from Atlético Madrid and have no intention of letting the striker go soon. A hefty €100 million release clause also secures Porto’s position in any negotiations.

Aghehowa made a name for himself in 2023/24 as Alavés’ top scorer while on loan from Atlético. He also impressed at the Paris Olympics, helping Spain secure gold.

Isak’s future adds uncertainty to Newcastle’s plans

Newcastle’s interest in Aghehowa coincides with ongoing uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak. Liverpool reportedly had a £110 million bid rejected by the Magpies.

Despite this, Portuguese paper O Jogo suggests a last-minute Premier League move for Aghehowa isn’t off the table, although the player’s reluctance is a significant barrier.

For any deal to go through, Porto would require an irresistible offer — something Newcastle has yet to show willingness to meet. With under a month left in the window, the club may need to seek alternatives.

Aghehowa is contracted to Porto until 2029 and, at just 21, has already made 45 appearances, scoring 27 goals and providing three assists — his most productive spell to date.
