Porto to win

While Moreirense have been outstanding on home turf this season, Porto boast the quality and firepower needed to get this one over the line and we are backing them to come out on top.

Freiburg and Utrecht return to action in the Europa League when they go head to head on Thursday. While the hosts are unbeaten in eight straight matches, the Domstedelingen head into the midweek clash fresh off the back of ending a six-game winless run.

FootballWhispers’ Moreirense vs Porto prediction takes a look at the odds of both sides securing all three points on Monday.

Moreirense vs Porto prediction: Dragoes to swiftly bounce back

Key stats

  • Porto have opened the scoring in four of their last five games against Moreirense, with at least three goals scored in all but one of their most recent six encounters.
  • Os verdes e brancos have failed to win any of their last seven Primeira Liga home matches against Porto, losing four and claiming three draws since a 3-1 victory in May 2017.
  • Porto have won each of their most recent five away matches in the league, a run stretching back to April 26, when they fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Estrela Amadora.
  • Moreirense are the only side with a 100% home record in the league this season, winning each of their four games at the Parque Joaquim de Almeida Freitas while scoring nine goals and conceding three so far.

Correct score prediction: Moreirense 1-3 Porto

Still licking their wounds from their shock cup exit, Moreirense will head into Monday’s tie looking to return to winning ways and restore some pride.

While Vasco Costa’s men have been outstanding on home turf this season, Porto boast the quality and firepower needed to get this one over the line and we are backing them to come out on top.

Porto suffered their first Europa League defeat of the season in midweek when they were beaten 2-0 by Premier League side Nottingham Forest at City Ground.

As for Moreirense, they were dumped out of the Taca de Portugal in the third round last Sunday when they suffered defeat at the hands of third-tier side AD Fafe.

Most recent H2Hs: Porto boasts clear upper hand

Porto have been utterly dominant in this fixture across the last 10 meetings between the two teams, having picked up eight wins and one draw since January 2021.

Moreirense's only victory in that time came in the Taca de Portugal fourth round in November 2024, when they edged out the Dragoes 2-1 on home turf.

Moreirense preview: Out to restore some pride and extend impressive run at home

Moreirense were dumped out of the Taca de Portugal last Sunday when they fell to a shock 1-0 defeat against 3. Liga outfit AD Fafe at the Parque Municipal dos Desportos de Fafe.

Following a goalless first half, 27-year-old defender Joao Batista came up trumps for the hosts as he struck in the 68th minute to fire them to a 1-0 victory and send them through to the fourth round.

The cup loss further highlighted Moreirense's struggles on enemy territory, as they have now lost each of their last four away matches since a 1-0 victory over Santa Clara on August 17.

However, Costa’s men now return to the Parque Joaquim de Almeida Freitas, where they boast the best home record in the Primeira Liga, having won each of their four matches so far.

In fairness, it has been a solid start to the league campaign for Moreirense, who have picked up five wins and lost three of their eight games to collect 15 points and sit fifth in the standings.

Predicted lineup: Caio Secco (GK), Pinto, Maracas, Marcelo, Kiko, Alan, Stjepanovic, Assis, Travassos, Lincon & Teguia

Last five games

  • Fafe 1-0 Moreirense
  • Nacional 3-2 Moreirense
  • Moreirense 2-1 Casa Pia
  • Sporting Lisbon 3-0 Moreirense
  • Moreirense 3-1 Rio Ave

Porto preview: Aiming to open up a four-point lead at the top of the table

Porto saw their perfect record in the Europa League come to an end on Thursday when they fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest in England.

Having secured victories over Salzburg and Red Star Belgrade in the first two games, the Dragoes were guilty of a lack of cutting in attack at City Ground as Morgan Gibbs-White and Igor Jesus hit the target in either half to hand the hosts a much-needed victory.

Prior to that, Porto were unbeaten in each of their 11 matches this season, picking up one draw and 10 wins, including a 4-0 victory over Celoricense in the Taca de Portugal third round on October 18.

Francesco Farioli’s men now turn their attention to the Primeira Liga, where they have picked up seven wins and one draw from their eight games to collect 22 points from a possible 24 and sit top of the table, one point above second-placed Benfica.

Predicted lineup: D Costa (GK), A Costa, Bednarek, Kiwior, Moura, Froholdt, Varela, Veiga, Pepe, Aghehowa, Sainz

Last five games

  • Nottingham Forest 2-0 Porto
  • Celoricense 0-4 Porto
  • Porto 0-0 Benfica
  • Porto 2-1 Red Star Belgrade
  • Arouca 0-4 Porto

Player to watch — Samu Aghehowa

Samu Aghehowa netted a second-half brace to fire Porto to a 3-1 victory over Moreirense in their most recent encounter back in May and the Spanish striker will be one to look out for on Monday.

Aghehowa endured a cold night against Nottingham Forest last time out, but he has been on song for Porto this season, netting five goals in seven league appearances (six starts) so far.

Just five days before the Nottingham Forest defeat, the 21-year-old scored a hat-trick in the Taca de Portugal win against Celoricense to take his goal tally to eight across all competitions for the season.

We expect Aghehowa to spearhead the Porto attack once again on Monday, teaming up with fellow countryman Borja Sainz and 28-year-old Pepe in the front three.
