🔥 Our Hot tip

Over 2.5 goals

Inter Milan have averaged four goals across their last five games.

Mexican side Monterrey will begin their FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a testing fixture against Italian heavyweights Inter Milan at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Monterrey vs Inter Milan prediction: Inter tipped to edge tight encounter

Key Stats

  • Monterrey have suffered defeat in two of their last four fixtures.
  • Inter have averaged nine corners across their last five games.
  • Both teams have scored in three of Monterrey’s previous four matches.
  • The Italians have scored two or more goals in four of their last five outings.

Correct score prediction: Monterrey 1–2 Inter

The predicted scoreline reflects the current rhythm of both sides. Monterrey have shown attacking intent, with 11 of their last 14 matches ending in both teams scoring. However, they have encountered inconsistency of late, losing four of their last nine games – all by the same 2–1 margin.

Meanwhile, Inter have won two of their last four and scored exactly twice in three of those fixtures. Based on these patterns, a 2–1 win for the Nerazzurri appears a realistic outcome.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Bookmakers favour Inter

  • HOME: 17/4 (5.25) – 19.05%
  • DRAW: 10/3 (4.33) – 23.09%
  • AWAY: 11/20 (1.55) – 64.52%

*odds from Ladbrokes, subject to change

Given the gulf in stature, Monterrey’s 19.05% chance of victory seems a fair assessment. The Mexican outfit have struggled for consistency and are yet to fully convince in recent outings.

Despite a stuttering end to their 2024-25 campaign, Inter’s 64.52% win probability underlines the confidence in their superior quality. The 2010 Club World Cup winners arrive with expectations of a strong showing under new leadership.

Most recent H2Hs: First competitive showdown

This will mark the first competitive meeting between the two teams. Their only previous encounter came in 1994 during the Tecate Cup – a friendly tournament held in Mexico. Inter Milan claimed a narrow 1–0 win on that occasion.

Monterrey preview: Ramos returns to lead experienced squad

Monterrey earned their place in this expanded Club World Cup by winning the 2021 CONCACAF Champions Cup.

The Rayados, under the leadership of former Barcelona assistant coach Domenec Torrent, arrive with a technically gifted group that includes several players with European pedigree.

German Berterame leads the line with 22 goals in 41 appearances, supported by ex-Spanish international Sergio Canales, who has netted 18 times in 42 matches. Former Sevilla duo Oliver Torres and Lucas Ocampos also add quality in the final third.

However, all eyes will be on veteran defender Sergio Ramos. The four-time Club World Cup winner joined Monterrey in February and is expected to return to the starting XI after missing the Liguilla Clausura.

Predicted lineup: Andrada (GK); Medina, Rodríguez, Ramos, Arteaga; Ambriz, Chávez; Torres, Canales, Corona; Berterame

Inter Milan preview: Chivu era begins after UCL final humiliation

Inter Milan enter the tournament looking to recover from a disappointing end to their 2024–25 season. The Nerazzurri missed out on the Scudetto to Napoli and were soundly beaten 5–0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final.

Following that defeat, Simone Inzaghi departed for Saudi Arabia and has been replaced by Cristian Chivu, who now faces his first test in charge.

Inter are without several figures from last season, with Joaquin Correa and Marko Arnautovic both departing. Midfielder Piotr Zielinski is doubtful due to a calf issue, while striker Mehdi Taremi is unavailable after travel complications.

Chivu could retain the familiar 3-5-2 setup, with Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram leading the attack.

Predicted lineup: Sommer (GK); Pavard, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Çalhanoğlu, Sučić, Dimarco; Thuram, Martínez

Player to watch: Lautaro Martinez

The Argentine forward registered 22 goals in 49 appearances during the 2024–25 season. Although he missed the majority of the final stretch due to a muscle problem, Martinez has repeatedly delivered in crucial moments for the Nerazzurri, making him a serious threat to Monterrey's backline.
