Monaco were forced to regroup ahead of Thursday’s return to the European scene as they suffered their first defeat of the season at the weekend, when they were beaten 1-0 by Lorient in the French Ligue 1.
Having picked up four wins and two draws from their first six matches, Noah Cadiou netted a second-half penalty to fire Lorient to an impressive victory at the Stade Yves Allainmat-Le Moustoir and hand the toothless visitors a reality check.
Monaco, who sit fifth in the Ligue 1 standings with 14 points from the first 21 available, now turn their focus to the Conference League, where they will be looking to continue from where they dropped off in a 2-1 victory over CSKA Sofia at the Balgarska Armia Stadium.
Paris Brunner and Ansu Fati netted first-half goals to put Monaco in the driver’s seat heading into half time, and after Joel Zwarts pulled one back for CSKA in the 76th minute, the French outfit held their own to see off a comeback scare and secure maximum points.
This followed a dominant team display in the qualifying playoffs, where Filipe Luis’s men secured a 7-3 aggregate victory over Gornik Zabrze, claiming a 3-2 first-leg victory in Poland on August 20, one week before securing a more convincing 4-1 second-leg victory at the Stade Louis II.
Over in Germany, Freiburg also picked up a dream start to the Conference League campaign last Thursday when they held on to see out a 3-2 win over a resilient Jablonec side at the Europa-Park Stadion.
In an end-to-end contest, strikes from Vincenzo Grifo and Maximilian Eggestein on either side of a 53rd-minute own goal from Dusan Pavlovic were enough to hand the hosts all three points, with Antonin Rusek and Garang Kuoul getting on the scoresheet for Jablonec.
A seventh-placed finish in the Bundesliga standings last season saw Freiburg book their spot in the Europa qualifying playoffs, where they thrashed Scottish side Motherwell 7-2 on aggregate to seal a first appearance in Europe’s third-tier club competition.
Like Monaco, Julian Schuster’s men head into Thursday's tie fresh off the back of suffering their first defeat of the season at the weekend, when they were beaten 2-1 by Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga, a result which has seen them drop into third place in the league standings with 13 points from six, one point behind league leaders Bayern Munich.
Freiburg have their sights set on making another deep run in Europe this season, after a stunning run to the Europa League final last term before suffering a 3-0 hammering at the hands of Premier League side Aston Villa on May 20.
