Middlesbrough vs West Brom prediction: Lath the difference maker

Key stats

  • Middlesbrough's Emmanuel Latte Lath and West Brom's Josh Maja are third and second in the Championship scoring charts, with 11 and 12 respectively.
  • Both sides have just one win in five coming into this clash.
  • West Brom have only lost three of their 14 away games.
  • Middlesbrough have only lost three of their 14 home games.

Correct score prediction: Middlesbrough 1-0 West Brom

Neither of these sides have been especially leaky, despite their poor form, so we expect a tight, low-scoring affair.

However, we think Middlesbrough have the edge in this one, thanks to Lath, who is fit and firing, while the Baggies' striker, Maja, is out injured until next month.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Boro backed by the bookies

  • HOME: 19/20 (1.95) – 51.3%
  • DRAW: 12/5 (3.40) – 29.4%
  • AWAY: 29/10 (3.90) – 25.6%

Middlesbrough are the bookmakers' expected winners in this clash. Their 19/20 odds implying a 51.3% likelihood of victory, a verdict we back.

Most recent H2Hs: In equilibrium

Middlesbrough's 1-0 win at The Hawthorns back in October kept this fixture perfectly balanced in the last five meetings. Middlesbrough have won the last two, but West Brom also have two victories, with one draw.

Middlesbrough preview: Response needed

Middlesbrough have acquitted themselves well this season, but have slipped into a rut of late. Boro lost to bogey side Blackburn in the FA Cup, then slumped to a surprise 2-1 defeat at Portsmouth.

To keep up their playoff hopes, Michael Carrick's side simply must beat the side one place above them.

Predicted Lineup: Glover (GK), van den Berg, Fry, Edmundson, Borges, Barlaser, Hackney, Doak, Azaz, Burgzorg, Lath

West Brom preview: Can they find goals?

Despite sitting in the playoffs, West Brom are only ninth for goals scored this season. They have particularly struggled since Maja's injury, only managing one goal in each of their last three.

However, headed to tricky Middlesbrough, we think their issues might deepen.

Predicted Lineup: Palmer (GK), Furlong, Holgate, Heggem, Styles, Molumby, Mowatt, Fellows, Grant, Johnston, Diangana

Emmanuel Latte Lath is gunning for the golden boot – Photo by Imago/Shaun Boggust

Player to watch – Emmanuel Latte Lath

Middlesbrough's Lath is the most likely difference maker in this clash, with plenty on the line for the Ivorian.

As well as potentially pushing his side back into the promotion spots, Lath could draw level with Maja in the race for the golden boot, and close the gap on Borja Sainz.
