Mexico will kickoff their World Cup 2026 knockout bid on Wednesday aiming to pick up where they left off in the group stage, having emerged as one of the nations to stand out in the opening stage of this summer's competition.

After reaching a ninth straight World Cup, with the 2022 edition their only group exit after seven consecutive round-of-16 defeats, having automatically qualified as a host nation, El Tri are the only team to have progressed with three wins and three clean sheets this tournament.

They made a dream start in the opening game of the entire tournament at home, beating South Africa 2-0, before taking on South Korea and winning 1-0 thanks to Luis Romo's goal.

Javier Aguirre's men then maintained a perfect record and top spot in their final group, meeting Czech Republic and dishing out a 3-0 beating with Julian Quinones netting for the second time this summer alongside goals from Mateo Chavez and Alvaro Fidalgo.

Now with form and momentum on their side and heading into their third game at the Estadio Azteca in the 2026 tournament, Mexico will hope to continue their journey as joint-hosts and win a World Cup knockout game since 1986 – when they came out on top in the round of 16 at the same iconic stadium.

Their opponents, meanwhile, will hope to dump out the joint-hosts and book their own final-16 place after getting to this stage in dramatic fashion.

Ecuador qualified for the second consecutive World Cup in impressive fashion in their South American group and set out to reach the knockout rounds for the first time since 2006.

Their three group games produced just four goals in total, scoring two and conceding two, and they went into their final match against favourites Germany in need of a victory after losing to Ivory Coast and drawing with Curacao.

Sebastian Beccacece's team then faced the toughest test yet against Germany, and after falling behind early, they quickly found a leveller through Nilson Angulo before Gonzalo Plata scored a 77th-minute winner to keep his nation's bid alive and book their place in the final 32.

Having shown early signs of the solidity that earned them plaudits in qualifying for the World Cup, and followed up a pair of disappointing results with a statement win under pressure last time out, Ecuador will hope to go from strength to strength on Wednesday and dump Mexico out at the Estadio Azteca.

Whispers predicts: Mexico 1-0 Ecuador

Mexico are yet to concede a goal at the World Cup this year, while Ecuador have only scored twice and conceded twice. We anticipate a low-scoring encounter at the Estadio Azteca and back under 2.5 goals at 4/9 (1.44).

Mexico's dominance in the group stage did not come thanks to relentless attacking triggering corner kicks, having only had four in the group stage, while nine of Ecuador's 17 came in one game against minnows Curacao. Under nine corners is priced at 8/11 (1.73).

Julian Quinones has been Mexico's main attacking outlet for large parts of the group stage so far and will be full of confidence with two goals on the board. He took five shots in the opener and four last time out and may again lead their charge while being forced to shoot from distance against a solid Ecuador defence. We fancy Quinones to take 4 or more shots at 7/4 (2.75).

📈 Mexico vs. Ecuador — Whispers' Tips

> Under 2.5 goals at 4/9 (1.44) | Likelihood: Likely

> Under nine corners at 8/11 (1.73) | Likelihood: Probable

> Julian Quinones 4+ shots at 7/4 (2.75) | Likelihood: Possible
