FT Draw

Given the stakes of this weekend’s tie, we predict both sides will cancel out each other’s efforts and settle for a share of the spoils.

In what could be a pivotal and potentially decisive moment in their battle for survival, Metz and Auxerre go head-to-head in round 22 of Ligue 1 on Sunday. Both sides are currently separated by just one point in the bottom three and will be looking to begin their turnaround this weekend.

FootballWhispers’ Metz vs Auxerre prediction examines the chances of both sides coming away with the desired result at the Stade Saint Symphorien.

Metz vs Auxerre prediction: Plenty of goalmouth action on the cards

Key stats

  • The last three meetings between Metz and Auxerre – including friendlies – have seen a staggering 13 goals scored, with Christophe Pelissier’s men netting 11 and going on to secure the win in all three encounters.
  • Auxerre have scored the opening goal in four of their last five games against Metz and have led at half time in four of the five games.
  • Metz are on a run of nine consecutive Ligue 1 games without a win, losing seven and picking up two draws since November’s 2-1 victory over Nice.
  • Metz currently hold the worst defensive record in the league, having conceded 46 goals already, six more than any other side in the division.

Correct score prediction: Metz 2-2 Auxerre

With the season’s run-in fast approaching, Metz and Auxerre know the clock is ticking away as they look to preserve their top-flight status. Given the stakes of this weekend’s tie, we expect both sides to go all out at the Stade Saint Symphorien, but we predict they will cancel out each other’s efforts and settle for a share of the spoils.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Auxerre backed as slight favourites

  • HOME: 15/8 (2.88) – 34.8%
  • DRAW: 2/1 (3.00) – 33.3%
  • AWAY: 8/5 (2.60) – 38.5%

With both teams looking to stop the rot and begin a much-needed turnaround, the bookmakers have Auxerre as slight favourites to come out on top, currently priced at 8/5.

This indicates a 38.5% win probability, slightly better than Metz’s 34.8% chance of victory, while there is a 33.3% likelihood of both sides settling for a share of the spoils.

Metz preview: Aiming to secure first win of the year and rise from the bottom of the table

Metz turned in a solid defensive display last Friday when they held on to see out a goalless draw against Lille at the Stade Saint Symphorien.

While the result against Lille saw them drop two more points, Metz are likely to draw optimism from that display, having managed just one point from the previous eight league matches.

Since picking up three wins on the bounce between October 29 and November 9, Benoit Tavenot’s men have now gone nine straight Ligue 1 matches without a win, a run which has seen them plunge to the bottom of the table.

While breaching opposition defences has come with relative ease for Metz, who have made the net ripple 21 times in the league alone, their struggles have come at the back, where they have conceded a staggering 46 goals already.

Predicted lineup: Fischer (GK), Kouao, Sane, Mboula, Ballo-Toure, Toure, Deminguet, Michal, Hein, Tsitaishvili & Diallo

Metz's last five matches:

  • 06/02/26: Metz 0-0 Lille (Ligue 1)
  • 01/02/26: Angers 1-0 Metz (Ligue 1)
  • 25/01/26: Metz 2-5 Lyon (Ligue 1)
  • 18/01/26: Strasbourg 2-1 Metz (Ligue 1)
  • 11/01/26: Metz 0-4 Montpellier (Coupe de France)

Auxerre preview: Seeking to secure first away win of the season

Auxerre were involved in a share of the spoils for a second consecutive game last Sunday when they played out a goalless draw with Paris FC at the Estadio de l'Abbe-Deschamps.

This followed a 0-0 stalemate with Toulouse at the Stadium de Toulouse on February 1, a result which saw their run of five straight defeats across all competitions come to an end.

Auxerre have lost 13 of their 21 Ligue 1 matches so far while claiming three wins and five draws to collect 14 points and sit 16th in the table, level on points with 17th-placed Nantes in the second automatic relegation spot.

While Auxerre will look to build on their result against Paris and move within five points of safety, results on the road offer little optimism, as Pelissier’s men head into the weekend as the only side yet to win an away game in the league this season, losing seven and claiming three draws so far.

Predicted lineup: Leon (GK), Mensah, Diomande, Akpa, Sy, Ahamada, Danois, Owusu, Sinayoko, Mara & Casimir

Auxerre's last five matches:

  • 08/02/26: Auxerre 0-0 Paris FC (Ligue 1)
  • 01/02/26: Toulouse 0-0 Auxerre (Ligue 1)
  • 23/01/26: Auxerre 0-1 Paris Saint-Germain (Ligue 1)
  • 17/01/26: Lens 1-0 Auxerre (Ligue 1)
  • 04/01/26: Stade Brestois 2-0 Auxerre (Ligue 1)

In what has been an underwhelming campaign for Auxerre, Sinayoko has been a bright spark for the Bourgogne-Franche-Comte outfit and the Malian striker will be one to keep an eye on this weekend.

The 26-year-old has started 20 of the 21 Ligue 1 matches and has found the back of the net on six occasions, four more than any other player for Auxerre, while providing two assists.

Sinayoko has struggled to regain his pre-AFCON form, but we expect the striker to spearhead Auxerre’s attack once again as he looks to snap a four-game goal drought.
