Having secured a 2-0 win over Troyes in their first outing after the international break, Marseille would have hoped to use that as a springboard to revive their season, but subsequent defeats to Olympiacos and, most recently, Sturm Graz in their next three matches have restored a familiar sense of gloom at the Velodrome.
However, Bruno Genesio’s side came out on top in their most recent league outing, beating Angers 5-2 at Stade Raymond Kopa to claim back-to-back league victories for the first time since the final day of last season.
While their European campaign appears to be in tatters, Les Phoceens seem to be finding their feet domestically, and another league win on Sunday would be a step in the right direction to ease the pressure on Genesio, at least temporarily.
After a 1-0 victory in May’s most recent encounter, Marseille have completed league doubles over Le Havre in each of the sides' last five seasons together and are unbeaten in 20 meetings across all competitions dating back to 1988.
With Mason Greenwood – who registered six goals and an assist in four games against Le Havre – no longer in the squad, Sunday’s hosts will need a new protagonist to step up if they are to close out October on a high.
Le Havre spent much of last season hovering around the drop zone and only secured their top-flight status on the final day. Based on the early evidence this term, another great escape may be required to avoid relegation.
Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Auxerre was Le Havre’s fifth loss in seven league outings. Didier Digard’s side are the only Ligue 1 team yet to record a victory and unsurprisingly sit bottom of the standings, already five points adrift of safety.
Only Nice have conceded fewer goals than Les Ciel et Marine’s 11 among all bottom-half teams, so much of their trouble stems from a toothless attack – just five goals scored, the lowest tally in the division.
Le Havre’s next two fixtures – against Marseille and reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain – are hardly ideal opportunities for a struggling team to get back on track. It is imperative they do not fall further behind in the race for survival.
Ayumu Seko returns from a one-game ban following his red card against Lille, handing the visitors a defensive boost. However, the continued absence of first-choice goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi remains a major blow.
