Four games into the 2026-27 Primeira Liga campaign, newly-promoted Maritimo had the first taste of defeat last Saturday when they were beaten 2-1 by Arouca at the Estadio Municipal de Arouca.
Spanish winger Martin Tejon netted in the 27th minute to put O Maior das Ilhas in front and on course for their third win of the season, but Espen Van Ee and Ivan Barbero hit back for Arouca to turn the game on its head.
Despite the defeat at Arouca, newly-appointed head coach Van der Gaag can take pride in what has been a solid start to his spell at the helm of affairs, with Maritimo sitting level on seven points with Gil Vicente and fifth-placed Benfica, having picked up two wins and one draw in their first four games since returning to the top flight.
Having won the Segunda Liga title to end their three-year spell in the second tier last season, Maritimo kicked off the new season with consecutive victories over Casa Pia and Famalicao before playing out a 2-2 stalemate with fellow newcomers Academico Viseu on August 22.
While Maritimo will be aiming to bounce back this weekend on their home patch, where they have picked up four points from two games, next up is the daunting challenge of an opposing side who have won each of their most recent six meetings since a 2-0 defeat in June 2020.
On the other hand, Benfica secured a fourth consecutive victory for the first time since December 2025 on Monday when they fought off a late comeback scare to secure a 2-1 win over Estoril Praia.
