Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo could be moving from England sooner than expected. The January transfer window is shaping up as a potential exit route for the England international, whose development is being closely monitored by Spanish La Liga giants.

After a breakthrough season, Mainoo became a key player in Manchester United's midfield under Erik ten Hag and broke into the England squad, where he impressed with the range of his passing and ability to accelerate the tempo of play. However, since the arrival of manager Ruben Amorim, his importance in the team has declined and he has been moved to a reserve role.

La Liga giants monitoring situation

According to information from The Daily Briefing, three Spanish heavyweights are interested in Mainoo: Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Whilst Los Blancos and the Blaugrana are keeping track of his situation, the strongest interest comes from Atletico Madrid.

Los Colchoneros have been linked with a loan for Mainoo in recent months and the latest reports suggest he could be a replacement if Conor Gallagher were to leave the club. Incidentally, the former Chelsea player has been quoted as a possible reinforcement for Manchester United in the winter transfer window.

Napoli reportedly leading the race

In addition to the major clubs from La Liga, a number of other teams are interested in Mainoo, including several from the Premier League. However, leading the race for his services at the moment is reportedly Italian side Napoli, who recently lost Kevin De Bruyne to a long-term injury.

The Italian outfit pursued Mainoo in the summer, but that transfer was blocked. Now it appears that the player himself desperately desires greater playing time. After Napoli successfully shopped at Old Trafford for Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund, they see Mainoo as another potentially advantageous addition.

A transfer to Real Madrid or Barcelona would be surprising, at least in my opinion, unless there is some serious injury, but Mainoo could make sense for Atletico Madrid as a possible replacement for Gallagher. Atletico are currently fourth in La Liga and trail leaders Real Madrid by eight points. In the next round of the Spanish top flight, they face Levante tomorrow, who are 16th in the table.
