After nearly three months of speculation and dramatic developments, the summer transfer window officially closed on Monday evening, with dozens of high-profile players securing moves to new clubs. Teams across the Premier League were highly active throughout the window, with the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United making deals right up to the final day.

Liverpool, Arsenal, City and United strengthen their squads

On deadline day, Liverpool secured their long-term attacking target Alexander Isak, Arsenal brought in defender Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen, and Manchester City completed the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma. Manchester United were also busy, finalising a deal for new goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

There was, however, one additional player United targeted but failed to secure before the deadline. He is now expected to become their primary objective in the winter window. The transfer window, which closed on 1 September, will remain shut for four months and is set to reopen on 1 January 2026, running until 2 February 2026.

Manchester United set sights on Gallagher

According to The Daily Mail‘s Chris Wheeler, Manchester United are expected to step up their pursuit of Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher. The report states that United enquired about a potential loan move for the former Chelsea and Crystal Palace man, but were informed that only a permanent deal would be considered.

Having already signed Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, Diego Leon and Lammens during the summer, United concluded that a permanent transfer for Gallagher was not feasible at this stage. However, they remain interested, and the England international is expected to be their main target in January.

Strengthening the midfield remains a priority for United ahead of the January or next summer window, meaning a renewed attempt for Gallagher is likely if a deal becomes realistic. With 136 Premier League appearances to his name, it is unsurprising that United are keen on the 24-year-old, who has featured in all three of Atletico Madrid’s opening La Liga fixtures.

It is likely, though, that United will face competition from other English clubs. Both Everton and Gallagher’s former club Crystal Palace were reportedly interested in the midfielder during the summer.
