Manchester City transfer news: City forward emerges as Barcelona’s Plan B

For the upcoming summer transfer window, FC Barcelona are working on backup solutions for their attack. A Manchester City player has been linked with the Catalan club.

The side managed by Hansi Flick are expected to be active in the next summer window. The Marcus Rashford case, for example, should occupy Barcelona's summer: according to Fabrizio Romano on X on Wednesday, the La Liga leaders are “progressing” in their discussions with the Englishman over a permanent move this summer.

However, Manchester United do not want to hear about a sale for less than £25.4m (€30m), the amount of the player's option to buy at Barcelona, which the Catalan club are hoping to renegotiate.

Behind Alvarez, a Manchester City striker for Barca?

For the striker position in particular, Barca are targeting Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez. But with Los Colchoneros potentially losing Antoine Griezmann in the coming days to MLS side Orlando City, it seems difficult to imagine the Madrid club agreeing to let the 26-year-old Argentine leave this summer. Unless an offer they cannot refuse arrives… but one that Barca do not appear able to make.

While Bernardo Silva is among Barca's targets for next summer, the Portuguese, who is out of contract, is not the only Manchester City player to interest sporting director Deco. According to Sport, Omar Marmoush is indeed the Spanish club's Plan B for the striker position.

Marmoush from Manchester City: Too expensive for Barca?

Signed in January 2025 for £64m (€75m), the 27-year-old Egyptian has been used far less by Pep Guardiola this season – 24 appearances, 10 starts. Two Premier League clubs – Aston Villa and Tottenham – even came close to signing the striker in January, before Manchester City decided to keep him, at least until summer 2026.

Under contract until June 2029, Omar Marmoush is valued at £55.1m (€65m) by Transfermarkt. Too expensive for FC Barcelona? While the Spanish club are reluctant to pay £25.4m (€30m) for Marcus Rashford, the fee for the Cityzens outcast could also be too high.
