Back with the national team, goalkeeper had decisive conversation before choosing Fenerbahce as new club this season.
After eight seasons and an enormous 18 titles, Ederson decided to leave Manchester City to represent Fenerbahce in 2025-26. He swapped the world's top leagues – Premier League and Champions League – to play in a secondary market in European football. And a Brazil national team legend weighed in his decision.
In a press conference on Wednesday (12th), the goalkeeper revealed he spoke with Taffarel before deciding on the transfer to Fenerbahce. Current goalkeeping coach for the national team, the starter in the World Cup four-peat conquest has already played for Galatasaray and passed on references about Istanbul to Ederson.
“I had a brief conversation with Taffarel. Despite him having played for rivals (Galatasaray), Taffarel spoke a thousand wonders about the city, the culture and the Turkish people. I also spoke with other Brazilians who played at Fenerbahce, who spoke well to me about the club, the city, the culture and the climate. So this ended up helping even more,” said Ederson in the press conference.
Why Ederson left Manchester City
Ederson also explained why he made the decision to leave Manchester City after so much time at home. The goalkeeper stated he did not feel happy playing for the Citizens and that he had already attempted a transfer in the 2024-25 season.

“I had already tried to leave, but it ended up not working out. I think this influenced my performance during the season. It was a decision I had already made with my family. I needed this change. There is no point being at a giant club whilst not being happy. This would continue affecting me. Sometimes it is very good for you to have new challenges in your life. I, with this change, am breathing football again and feeling the atmosphere of matches in Turkey, which is crazy,” said the goalkeeper.
Ederson returns to national team under Ancelotti
This is the first time Ederson has reported to the national team under Ancelotti's command and also since he transferred to Fenerbahce. Before this, the goalkeeper had even been called up for the October international break, but ended up being cut due to injury.
The cuts, moreover, are part of the goalkeeper's routine in this World Cup cycle. There have already been five cuts since the last World Cup. So many absences meant he lost the condition of certain name for 2026.
Whilst Alisson is starter and guaranteed name, Bento has risen in the national team's goalkeeper hierarchy. Today, the battle for the third spot is between Ederson and Hugo Souza, with John running on the outside.
“It always generates great expectation now that it is very close to the World Cup. I was out of the last call-ups because of injury, my expectation is great. No player has a guaranteed place, the only one who has it is Ancelotti. Then the final decision will be up to him, because there are many players with great quality, and I think he will have a headache selecting the 23 players,” states the goalkeeper.
