Manchester City transfer news: Arsenal set to rival Cityzens for Bundesliga defender

With the January transfer window approaching, both Manchester City and Arsenal are reportedly showing interest in the same defender.

While the summer transfer window is already behind us, Europe's biggest clubs are now turning their attention to potential business in January. One of the names generating growing interest in the Premier League is Nathaniel Brown, a 22-year-old left-back currently playing for Eintracht Frankfurt.

Signed from Nuremberg in January 2024, the German-American has established himself as one of the most reliable players in his position in the Bundesliga. He made 33 appearances last season, scoring three goals and providing seven assists, and has started the new campaign strongly with one goal and one assist in his first five matches.

Nathaniel Brown attracting Premier League interest

Capable of playing as a traditional left-back or as a wing-back, Brown is already being monitored closely by Manchester City, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Arsenal, according to Caught Offside. The British outlet claims that the Gunners and the Sky Blues could soon make a move to strengthen their options on the left side of defence.

Manchester City currently only have one natural left-back in their squad in Rayan Ait-Nouri, who is presently sidelined through injury. Arsenal, by contrast, appear to be well covered in that area, with two promising young players already available in Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly.

A January signing tailored for Manchester City?

Should the growing interest from these financially powerful Premier League clubs result in formal offers during the winter window, Eintracht Frankfurt may struggle to hold on to their highly-rated defender, despite his current contract running until June 2030.

Among the clubs mentioned, Manchester City seem to be the side in greatest need of a player like Nathaniel Brown, who is currently valued at around £19m (€22m) by Transfermarkt. At 22 years of age, he represents a solid long-term investment and brings Bundesliga experience as well as recent exposure to Champions League football with Frankfurt.

It is also worth noting that City already have a working relationship with the German club, having negotiated the £65m signing of Omar Marmoush last January – a connection that could prove useful in this latest pursuit.
